From Paper to Stage: The Basics of Costume Design (15-18)

Ever wondered how your favourite theatre and movie costumes were designed? What's the process of designing a costume and how does a designer know what to include? Wonder no more! 

In this class, students will be taken through the steps of putting together a costume design and learn how to analyze a character to make a costume that is just right. They will analyze photos and videos individually and as a class, sharing their thoughts with the teacher and their classmates as they try to determine why costumes are designed the way they are. They will be taken through the steps of designing a costume and learn how to include tiny details that can make all the difference in bringing characters to life. At the end of the class, students will choose a character to design a costume for, work in individual Breakout Rooms, then gather again to share their creations. No prior knowledge or experience in theatre is necessary. 

This class is primarily lecture and discussion based. Students will be taken through a slide presentation and asked questions throughout the lesson to gauge their understanding. Students are encouraged to take notes throughout the class to help them retain their learning.
