In this age-appropriate and interactive class we will learn about four influential and famous men from Ancient Greece. Homer is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential authors of all time and is the legendary author of the Odyssey and the Illiad. We will learn about how these epic poems were composed to be heard rather than read, and that they were performed throughout Ancient Greece by rhapsodes. We will also briefly look at the content of both epics and whether any of the adventurous or magical tales could be explained by science today. Next, we will look at Herodotus, often called 'The Father of History'. Through his book 'The Histories' we have been able to learn about many historical events such as the Persian Wars. We will then move on to Hippocrates who was a Greek physician of the classical period who is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine. The Hippocratic oath which is sworn by medical students around the world, is named after him. Lastly, we will learn about Phidias - a Greek sculptor, painter, and architect. His Statue of Zeus at Olympia was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This class will be lecture based and use slides and exciting videos from Ted-ed. There will be an interactive quiz at the end and learners are encouraged to ask questions throughout the class. No experience necessary, all are welcome.
