Class Experience

Week 1: Your student will learn how to read the treble clef staff. I will have a whiteboard with sheet music as well as flash cards.

Week 2: Students will then learn to read the bass cleff staff.
We will also use flash cards and a white board.

Week 3: In this class, students will play games and exercises to help further their understanding of the grand staff.

Week 4: This week, we will interpret musical examples of various melodies written to sheet music and how that translates to the music we hear. Students are welcome to bring their own examples to share if they so choose.

I will help each student to understand the staff so when he/she applies it to their own musical instrument, the task will not be so daunting.

Learning Goals

By the end of class, each student will know the notes on a staff and also know the basics for writing their own melodies.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Valorie Hammonds. I have over 12 years of experience teaching piano lessons and feel very comfortable teaching music theory in a fun and unique way! My lessons can be laid back or by-the-book, whatever your child is comfortable with. I have taught over 100 students and have met so many incredible people. I truly believe that everyone can learn music and it is a basic human desire. Music is my lifeblood and teaching is my passion!

I graduated from Randolph Macon with a bachelor degree in Music and Education. There I learned how to make music theory fun and easy to learn in a classroom environment as well as private lessons. My main focus was piano and voice, although I also studied flute and cello as well.

I believe that students make the best teachers and I’m a lifelong learner. I am always finding new teaching methods and exploring any subject that interests me. I have always been interested in the language and history of music. Thank you for supporting me and I look forward to seeing your child in my classroom!
