Class Experience

Week 1: The first week will be a basic review of the grand staff as well as the first look into intervals on the staff. We will also be able to differentiate between melodic and harmonic intervals on the staff.

Week 2: We will continue our discussion on intervals all the way up to octaves as well as a few basic chords using the intervals we just learned.

Week 3: In this class, students we will divert our attention to rhythm, specifically bar lines and time signature. This will be the mathematical component to reading sheet music,

Week 4: This week, we will interpret musical examples and expand upon the rhyming notations learned in the last class. We will also discuss the various endings your student might encounter in their musical endeavors. This include D.C. al Fine, D.S. al Fine, Cody’s, double bar lines, and repeat signs.

I will help each student to further understand the staff as it fits in a song or composition.
Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Valorie Hammonds. I have over 12 years of experience teaching piano lessons and feel very comfortable teaching music theory in a fun and unique way! My lessons can be laid back or by-the-book, whatever your child is comfortable with. I have taught over 100 students and have met so many incredible people. I truly believe that everyone can learn music and it is a basic human desire. Music is my lifeblood and teaching is my passion!

I graduated from Randolph Macon with a bachelor degree in Music and Education. There I learned how to make music theory fun and easy to learn in a classroom environment as well as private lessons. My main focus was piano and voice, although I also studied flute and cello as well.

I believe that students make the best teachers and I’m a lifelong learner. I am always finding new teaching methods and exploring any subject that interests me. I have always been interested in the language and history of music. Thank you for supporting me and I look forward to seeing your child in my classroom!
