Over 4 weeks, chat with an experienced educator and other elementary school-aged students to help build social skills.
Class experience
The purpose of this four-session, month-long class is to provide elementary school students the opportunity to build their social skills with the same group over the course of four weeks. Meeting weekly, each session is intended to build on the previous sessions. The instructor will invite the students to share stories about their lives, encouraging students to build relationships with each other over things they find in common. Students will learn about and expand some basic verbal social skills (using supportive comments, asking questions) and some basic nonverbal social skills (making eye contact, nodding).
I've been a certified teacher for over 30 years (my Washington State teaching certificate includes endorsements for special education from pre-school through high school) and in that time have taught children from elementary school through high school. I've taught self-contained 5th & 6th-grade classes and was the founder of a progressive middle & high school, a place where I taught for nearly 25 years. I have decades of experience helping students build social and emotional skills in school settings and consider it to be one of my strongest gifts.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Given the age of the students, I don't expect there to be any mature topics raised.
