French to Go - For Students with an Upcoming Trip to France who Need a Survival-Type Course
What's included
8 live meetings
8 in-class hoursClass Experience
We'll cover enough numbers to make purchases and get around. Greetings, asking for information and giving basic information will be a necessary skill that we'll cover. We'll discuss all of the polite language that the French expect. Being able to ask for and follow directions will be covered. Of course, a traveler needs to learn how to navigate restaurants and cafes and how to order from menus. We'll learn enough about Euros to know the cost of food and items we want to purchase. We also need to have enough vocabulary to do some shopping. Fortunately for us, t-shirt is a cognate, so t-shirt will work. Emergency words are necessary and are often cognates, like: police, hôpital, and if you get turned around, hôtel. Students will learn that because of cognates they can use a great deal more French than they think. While in Paris it is important to have a basic understanding of the métro, since this is the primary, inexpensive and easily available transportation. There are some very good apps for phones and some not so good ones. We'll look at the ones that are best for the traveler, including a translation app that is much better than carrying around a dictionary. With the French covered in this course, students can travel to France confident that, even if they are not fluent speakers, they can have enough language to function well and concentrate on having a good time.
