Class Experience
Beginner - Advanced Level
French horn is a unique instrument that is challenging for beginners and more experienced players alike. Whether your student is just starting the French horn as a first instrument, is switching from another instrument, or is an experienced player looking for extra guidance to accomplish specific goals or prepare for an audition or competition, private lessons can help! In lessons, I focus on developing and strengthening the fundamentals of horn playing, including including tone production, flexibility, range, articulation, phrasing, and basic music theory. As students master these skills, I help them refine their playing and develop their musicianship through standard etudes and solo works. One-on-one lessons are tailored specifically for each student, and students will be assigned exercises and music based on their individual needs. I recommend lessons once a week, and I expect students to practice on their own 4-5 times a week outside of lessons. I spend the first part of each lesson working on warm-up exercises and technique development, followed by etudes, solo pieces, band/orchestra music, audition repertoire, and any other music the student is learning. Students are given ability-appropriate practice assignments each week, which usually include a warm-up routine, 1-2 technical exercises, scales, etudes, solo piece, and any additional ensemble music for upcoming performances. For intermediate and advanced students interested in refining their skills through a more rigorous approach, I also offer 60-min lessons (see other course listing). Lessons are scheduled at a time convenient for both of us. If you are interested in lessons but don't see a time that works for you, please feel free to reach out. I hope to see your student in lessons soon!

Some popular options are borrowing a horn and mouthpiece from school, renting from a local music store, or buying a quality used instrument ($900-$2000). Most students will want to buy a standard mouthpiece ($50-$85) that suits their embouchure (generally not the mouthpiece that comes in the horn case).
