Kids love to express themselves and share their thoughts, but they can face challenges with confidence. My class provides a supportive environment where they can have a safe space to speak freely, and we will build conversation! This one-on-one can be purely conversational or students and parents can let me know about certain speaking or social areas they would like to work on. My goal is for my students to build confidence in speaking and to work on any social anxieties they may experience with talking to others. Free talk is incredibly important for kids for several reasons: 1. It builds confidence! Engaging in free talk allows children to express themselves without the pressure of a specific agenda or right/wrong answers. This helps them develop confidence in their ability to communicate their thoughts and ideas, fostering a sense of self-assurance that extends beyond just language skills. 2. It improves communication skills When kids engage in open conversation, they practice using words, forming sentences, and organizing their thoughts in real-time. This strengthens their language skills, including vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure, in a natural, interactive way. 3. Encourages emotional expression Free talk gives children a chance to verbalize their feelings and emotions. This can be especially beneficial for social-emotional development, helping kids understand and articulate their emotions, which is crucial for mental health and building relationships. 4. Promotes social skills By engaging in conversation, children learn important social skills such as turn-taking, active listening, and empathy. These are vital for building healthy relationships with peers and adults, both in and out of school. 5. Reduces social anxiety The more children practice talking in a supportive, low-pressure environment, the less likely they are to feel anxious or self-conscious in social situations. Free talk helps normalize interaction and reduces the fear of making mistakes or being judged. I know I suffered from bad social anxiety in school but putting myself in social situations and conversations has helped me tremendously and I have made huge strides because of it. 6. It encourages critical thinking In casual conversations, children are often prompted to think critically and problem-solve on the spot, whether it’s answering a question or engaging in a back-and-forth dialogue. This sharpens their cognitive and reasoning skills. 7. Fosters creativity When kids talk freely, they have the freedom to explore new ideas, share stories, and imagine possibilities. This sparks creativity and helps them develop a flexible, open-minded approach to problem-solving and communication.

Through my teaching experience, I have had massive success in building good rapport with my students. Building those connections with students is my favorite part of the job! Seeing the joy of them connecting and having a safe person to talk to makes my entire heart so full. In college, I won the Dr. Joseph Rogan Excellence in Teaching award, largely in part for my ability to connect with my students.
