Class experience
Students will study the novel "Freak The Mighty" by Rodman Philbrick in a group setting. Throughout the class, students will have the opportunity to explore how characters change throughout the plot of a story, expand their vocabulary, practice writing responses to prompts, and strengthen reading comprehension. Students will improve their understanding of essential features seen in novels, including conflict types and character traits. Students will practice identifying and interpreting figurative language and conflict types presented within a novel. Students will practice improving their reading comprehension skills.
Yolanda Newton is a licensed teacher with over 15 years of instructional experience, including middle and high school English Language Arts, and specific experience teaching this novel. Her academic background includes sociology, history, women's studies, teaching theory, and Distance Learning Education. Mrs. Newton has taught History, Sociology, and English Language Arts for high school-level students in a traditional classroom setting and online. Her experience includes working with Gifted students, multi-exceptional students, and special education. She continues to improve and grow as an educator and student and is currently enrolled in post-graduate classes to sharpen her skills in Distance Education.
There are optional printables most weeks of the course. For the project, students will have several options to select from--so the following listed items are not "required," but options depending on the chosen project: the capacity to video record, basic art supplies, access to PowerPoint or Google Slides, poster board, a paper bag.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
This story includes scenes of violence. One of the main characters experiences flashbacks of his father murdering his mother. The father also commits acts of violence against his son and another character during the storyline. This story also touches on the subject matter of death, depression, and bullying.
