Welcome to our book club! *** Learners do not need to purchase books. Teacher will share her copy during the lesson. ***

We will become part of Franklin's world as we read, imagine, question and discuss Franklin & Friends books. Each week we will read a different Franklin book. Our weekly theme will be related to the book. The teacher will focus on manners, mindfulness and social skills during class. Learning moments will be utilized as much as possible while the teacher and students discuss the story. The teacher will post optional activities in the classroom related to the weekly theme. Grown-ups can use these activities to extend their learner's education before or after class, but it is not required.

Class will begin with greetings and icebreaker activities. Students are allowed to freely speak and engage with the teacher and other students. Mute is often optional but will be used if needed. To promote focus and compassion during this class format, we will follow greetings with a 1-2 minute mindfulness activity. Example: We will all imagine holding a warm cup of hot chocolate and blow on it before pretending to take a drink.

After our mindfulness activity we will observe the book cover and discuss predictions as a group. We will honor the hardworking authors, illustrators and publishers together by discussing what they contributed to the book and who they are. If learners attend multiple classes they will quickly understand the definition of author, illustrator and publisher. The teacher will then read the book while observing engagement and reactions. Props and extension activities will be used to increase engagement and understanding. Learners will be welcome to discuss, ask questions and provide feedback throughout each story. Following Montessori principles, the teacher will spread their attention around and praise effort while encouraging learners to feel proud of themselves. We will end class relating to Franklin & Friends by discussing or role-playing how we can apply the lesson to our own lives. Formal participation is optional and all personalities are welcome!

The Friendship Haven classroom is welcoming, positive and social. Our goal is for your child to gain the skills required for lifetime of self-guided learning. As they show interest in different things around them, we will guide their curiosity with fun education. In the virtual classroom we use components of a Montessori school by finding common household objects to nurture engagement and understanding during class. Our pace and lessons will vary depending on the needs of each student and the class as a whole. Parents, We'd love to work together to make sure your child is accommodated in our classroom if required. Please reach out and we can make a plan together! ESL students are always welcome to join the fun ☺️

Franklin the Turtle is a Canadian children's book franchise. All books in the original series were written by Paulette Bourgeois and illustrated by Brenda Clark. At Friendship Haven, we want to honour their dedication to making a difference in the lives of children.

All Friendship Haven teachers have received extensive training prior to attending class with your treasured learners. We have all worked with children virtually and in person. Our teachers are Canadians that were raised with Franklin books and later Franklin TV shows. We learned with Franklin and Friends as children then later used our experiences to teach the next generation of lovable humans. We collaborated using our Early Childhood Education, combined 42 years of lived experience working with children and our passion for literature. Welcome to Friendship Haven!
