Students will participate in Readers’ Theater drama plays which can be a valuable and rewarding reading activity. The plays provide a fun, safe, and effective way for students to practice and improve their reading fluency, which can lead to gains in reading comprehension. Each play has speaking roles, so all students will have an opportunity to participate in reading a character's lines. Most lines have a prompt before their dialogue begins which tells them the emotion to bring out in their voice while reading. This enables students to use their expressive speaking tone while reading their lines. In addition, each play has a list of “Watch Out Words”, which we discuss before reading. These are important vocabulary words in fairy tales. Also, we compare and contrast the original fairy tale to the fractured version. We discuss the original before reading and compare/contrast the fractured after. This class provides practice for students who enjoy performing in theater and drama plays, by ‘showing’ the character’s mood and behavior in their voice. Each class section practices a new play. Drama plays include the following Fractured Fairy Tales: Week 1~ Jack and the Cornstalk Week 2 ~ Cinder...Really? Week 3 ~ Goldilocks and the Three Ardvarks Week 4 The Princess and the Potato Week 5~ The Three Pirate Pigs Week 6~ Gransel and Hetel Week 7 ~ Little Red Boxer Shorts Week 8 ~ Rumpelstiltskin ** Get $10 off my class "Fractured Fairy Tales ~ Drama Plays" with coupon code KIT6P5QK10 until Aug 31, 2023. Teacher expertise and credentials
Iowa Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello, my name is Kathleen Bernath Jenkins and I am a recently retired elementary public school teacher in Missouri. I have a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in differentiated instructional methods. Most recently, I have taught fourth-grade students the core academic skills: reading, grammar, writing, math, science, and social studies.
I have a passion for teaching children the skills needed for them to be successful citizens. I believe all children can achieve success at school by differentiating instructional methods, which allows for individual growth and expression. My approach to teaching is to focus on best practices, those proven to be successful across all educational settings: teacher modeling and interaction with students, setting clear objectives at the start of each lesson, encouraging group participation, and debriefing together at the close of a lesson.
Besides my love of teaching, I also have a greenhouse and enjoy growing and propagating plants, especially tropical and rare varieties!
