## Description

### Class Experience

Proficiency with fractions is an important foundation for learning more advanced mathematics. Fractions are a student’s first introduction to abstraction in mathematics and, as such, provide the best introduction to algebra in the elementary and middle school years. Time and emphasis are necessary for students to develop the links among fractions, decimals, and percents and solve problems involving their use. (National Council of Mathematics Teachers). Students will learn the steps to use to multiply fractions and important math vocabulary: * vocabulary: numerator, denominator, proper fraction, improper fraction, mixed number key words for multiplication, greatest common factor * how to find the greatest common factor * how to use the greatest common factor to reduce fractions * follow-up classes may include deciphering word problems that require multiplying fractions * depending on class progress, follow-up classes may move into dividing fractions. Class is structured in a manner of "I do," "we do," and "you do." I will start by working a problem together, then students will all attempt to work a problem that is chosen by me, finally, students will each try a problem on his/her own. I use an electronic whiteboard so that transitions are smooth and math is easily shown. I like to try to build confidence in students and celebrate the successes and help provide support when students aren't as successful. I feel I am a nurturer and I like to have a little fun, but not so much it gets students off topic. I have fun with the scenarios and choose things they may enjoy. Learners will have a chance to say hello to one another and make quick introductions. I like for learners to share their thinking in the "we do" part of the lesson because sometimes they are able to explain an idea differently than I do, thereby reaching a student who may be struggling. It is also good practice for students to express thoughts and ideas in a meaningful manner. I will have access to some learning games for students to use to practice math in general, or lessons specifically for the fraction topics covered. I can also adapt the online lessons once students complete one so that I can make it easier, or more challenging.

Paper and pencil, or whiteboard. Multiplication table if your child doesn't have the multiplication facts memorized.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

2 hours per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
