Fractions and Measuring With a Ruler

First, we will look at a ruler. We will note all the lines between the numbers. Then we will draw and label those lines to identify each line. This will include a discussion of fractions as each line represents a fraction of the space between the lines. Next, we will learn what a starting point in measuring is. Teacher 4th and 5th grade for so many years I found students cannot measure or read a ruler. After teaching this lesson, most of the students were able to use a ruler, yardstick, or measuring tape without difficulty.

Each student should have a ruler with marks between numbers. Try to find one with sixteenth, but eighths is a must! Be aware of the scavenger hunt. They will be looking for objects with different lengths.
