Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
First, we will look at a ruler. We will note all the lines between the numbers. Then we will draw and label those lines to identify each line. This will include a discussion of fractions as each line represents a fraction of the space between the lines. Next, we will learn what a starting point in measuring is. Not all rulers start at the end. Some have a small space before the starting mark of zero. Then we will read the ruler and measure several items I have pictured. Finally, we will go on a scavenger hunt to find items of a given length.
Learning Goals
The students will learn to measure an object in inches with a ruler.

Supply List
Each student should have a ruler with marks between numbers. Try to find one with sixteenth, but eighths is a must! Be aware of the scavenger hunt. They will be looking for objects with different lengths.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Teacher 4th and 5th grade for so many years I found students cannot measure or read a ruler. After teaching this lesson, most of the students were able to use a ruler, yardstick, or measuring tape without difficulty.
