30 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Play is such an effective way to learn a concept! In this 30 minute class students will attend a fun virtual tea party and learn about basic fractions. After brief introductions among tea party goers, the teacher will introduce the concept of a fraction as part of a whole. Using playdough, students will explore the difference between equal parts of a whole and unequal parts. Students will then learn the meaning of half and quarter by creating playdough cakes that they cut into fractions and serve to their stuffed animals. We will also explore the idea that the same fraction can look different depending on the shape of the whole by making different shaped cakes. Please take a moment to read over my class policies: 1. My goal is to keep classes close to the scheduled amount of time, however, sometime classes with low enrollment or especially talkative students may go over or under a few minutes. 2. I always teach classes that have fewer than the minimum required students unless the parent or learner requests to transfer to a fuller section. 3. Classes will begin and end at the scheduled times, even if learners are late to the classroom or absent. 4. If no learners are in the classroom, I will wait 10 minutes before exiting the classroom. Per Outschool policy, "If your learners have not joined the meeting 10 minutes after the start time, the meeting may be canceled, at the teacher's discretion. This is considered a missed meeting and learners are not entitled to a refund." 5. To ensure safety and security, ALL of my students are required to turn on their cameras at the beginning of class so I can check identity. Students will be asked to speak throughout class, so a working microphone is required. This also helps ensure security and safety. 6. Parents are not required to be present during class, but it is helpful to be nearby in case your child has IT issues. 7. Per Outschool's policies for multiple learners from the same household, "Parents are welcome to enroll two or more learners in the same section of a class provided that the class has enough spaces. You will need to enroll each learner separately for the section, but learners are welcome to share a device if that would make it easier to attend class."
Learning Goals
Students will learn that a fraction is a part of a whole and that to make a fraction all parts must be equal in size. Students will section a whole shape into two and four equal shares, describing the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters.

Teacher expertise and credentials
William Butler Yeats said, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” I believe that education should spark curiosity and a love of learning, and I’ve spent over 20 years working with children practicing this belief.
I spent many summers as a swim instructor, 8 years as an elementary school teacher in San Francisco and 3 years as a math and reading tutor. I volunteered abroad as a kindergarten teacher in West Africa, substitute taught in preschool and elementary school and now I am a stay-at-home mom!
As an Outschool teacher, I am dedicated to making courses that are fun and engaging for young children. I often include play or games in my instruction. My goal is for my students’ faces to show joy and concentration within the same session, that they are having fun and being challenged!
