Class Description:

Welcome to the Fraction Multiplication Course! In this semester-long course, students will delve into the world of fraction multiplication, developing a strong foundation in this fundamental math skill. Designed for students aged 10-12, this course will provide a comprehensive understanding of fraction multiplication and its applications.

What will be taught?

Throughout the course, students will learn the essential concepts, techniques, and strategies related to fraction multiplication. They will explore various topics such as multiplying fractions with whole numbers, multiplying mixed numbers, simplifying fractions, and solving word problems involving fraction multiplication. By the end of the course, students will have mastered the skills necessary to confidently multiply fractions in a variety of contexts.

How is your class structured?

The class is structured as a dynamic and interactive learning experience. Each session will consist of a combination of instructional activities, guided practice, collaborative exercises, and independent problem-solving tasks. The course will make use of a variety of resources, including worksheets, interactive online tools, manipulatives, and real-world examples, to enhance the learning process.

How will you teach?

The course will employ a blended teaching approach, combining both traditional teaching methods and multimedia resources. Lessons will be delivered through a mixture of live virtual sessions, pre-recorded video lessons, interactive slides, and engaging educational games. These varied teaching methods aim to cater to different learning styles and keep the students actively engaged throughout the course.

What's your teaching style?

As an instructor, I believe in fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment. I strive to create a supportive atmosphere where students feel comfortable asking questions, sharing their thoughts, and actively participating in discussions. My teaching style emphasizes conceptual understanding and the application of learned skills in real-world scenarios. I aim to make the learning experience enjoyable and interactive, incorporating elements of gamification and problem-solving challenges into the lessons.

How much will learners get to interact with you and each other?

Learners will have ample opportunities to interact with both the instructor and their peers. Each session will include dedicated time for discussions, group activities, and collaborative problem-solving. Students will engage in lively discussions about different approaches to fraction multiplication, share their strategies, and learn from each other's perspectives. Additionally, online discussion boards and forums will be available for students to connect outside of class hours and continue the learning dialogue.

Required Experience or Knowledge:

No prior experience with fraction multiplication is required for this course. However, students should have a basic understanding of fractions, including concepts such as numerator, denominator, and equivalent fractions. Familiarity with basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, and division) is also recommended.

Math Planets is an organization that focuses on math with fun! We incorporate games into many of our sessions to keep learners engaged. As a parent, she enjoys homeschooling her child and has crafted her own curriculum to meet her son's needs, including overcoming speech delays. Ancuta has years of experience in professional training, sales, and tutoring. She continues her passion for teaching, as she believes that understanding the importance to math as it relates to the world around us is vital for young minds to understand.

Angeline is currently enrolled in a nursing program and plans to study accounting afterwards. Since she was a young girl, she has strived to work in healthcare and be an entrepreneur. She finds great value in mathematics, as Angeline recognizes the importance of it to all parts of life. She hopes that supporting students can lead them to recognizing the value of knowledge, especially as it pertains to math.​

Calenna (Cal) studies philosophy and studio art, and they also hold a Master's in Liberal Studies. Since they were a young child, Calenna has had a passion for teaching. Cal's parents were born in impoverished areas, and she grew up with financial struggles. They have seen firsthand how important education and access to quality education can make a difference, one student at a time. They believe that working as a tutor and mentor can be more impactful than being under the constraints of the educational systems in place. They have been a mentor, sports coach, and tutor for over a decade. Calenna loves tutoring and supporting her fellow coaches to make the world a better place, one student at a time.​

-Their "special interests" are anime and Marvel Comics
-They played field hockey and lacrosse at high school and collegiate levels

Carmen has a Bachelor's degree in biophysics; she also has much experience in tutoring students in multiple subjects, including biology and chemistry. She has a passion for finding different ways to explain concepts, as Carmen finds it extremely rewarding to see her students have their "eureka moment," especially after running into trouble with it.

Joshua K (Josh) holds a degree in Biological Science, as well as Fish and Wildlife Technology. Josh holds a great passion for the environment and has held many positions relating to environmental issues throughout his career. While the nature of his work is seasonal, he takes the extra time to care for himself and his family. One of his career goals is to create a business with his pythons. Throughout his youth, Josh has always found great value in education, whether it was at school or at home with his sister. Tutoring works for Josh because he loves learning and helping others learn, too.

He enjoys being in education because he excels at determining the strengths and weaknesses of students, as well as supporting them where needed. He hopes to continue helping students conquer their fear of math, making learning fun, and most of all, making smile.

Mactavius is currently a full-time student studying Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Media Arts Technology & Production; he also has experience in nuclear engineering. Mac has been tutoring since he was in middle school in various subjects. He deeply enjoys teaching other students and his peers in Calculus, Physics, and many other subjects that relate to math.
