US Grade 4 - 6
Beginner Level
Students will practice working with fractions using hands-on and critical-thinking methods. This is a high-involvement class, so students should come to class with cameras and microphones on. This course's purpose is for students to strengthen their understanding of fractions and find patterns within fractions to make working with them more accessible. Students should know how to add and subtract fractions with common denominators and have a basic working knowledge of fractions. This course will explore fractions with math manipulatives to strengthen concrete understanding. Students will be given virtual manipulatives to use. Printable materials can be given upon request. Students will need colored pens/pencils and paper for both classes. The camp will consist of two days: Day 1: Students will explore addition and subtraction of fractions using fraction tiles and pattern blocks. Day 2: Students will explore multiplication and division of fractions using area models, cuisinare rods, and fraction tiles.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions with visual aids.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Missouri Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Master's Degree in Mathematics from Drury University
I am a non traditional teacher, no lectures here!
Instead my classes focus on being:
*Student Centered- they lead the pace
*Critical Thinking -complex tasks are given that may be a bit unusual but will cause students to think deeply
*Problem Solving- word problems to keep concepts in context
*Focus on discovering patterns- patterns is the basis of the study of algebra and higher levels of math thinking
*Students create their understanding versus being told what to think
I am constantly learning how to become a better math teacher! I have a Master's degree in Math Education but I don't believe that means I know everything. In fact I am constantly reading about the brain, and the best ways to teach math. I also am constantly evaluating my classes and content and making changes based on how learners interact with the material.
I have 13 years of experience in Education, and have taught math at all levels including adults.

In my down time, I love hanging with my husband, and two girls. We love to read books, play games and do math together (of course:)
