Class Experience

US Grade 4
In a small group, low-pressure environment, students will learn and/or practice multiplication strategies to solve multi-digit multiplication problems. Strategies of focus include area model and partial products. Students can attend one course as a refresher, practice class, or test prep, or students can attend consecutive weeks as they learn how to effectively and independently use a given strategy. This class will be structed like a tutoring session in which we move at the pace of the learners and focus on the strategies each learner needs to practice. We will work primarily as a group, though I will provide opportunity for individual practice and solving before reviewing some problems together as a group. Multiplication practice might include flashcards, songs, and other activities. The foci of the first four meetings include:

Week of 01/05: Review of multiplication facts and introduction of the area model with one-digit by two-digit multiplication problems

Week of 01/12: Area model practice of one-digit by two-digit multiplication problems then exploring how to solve two-digit by two-digit multiplication problems using the area model

Week of 01/19: Introduction to partial products and comparison of this strategy with the area model through examination and practice of one-digit by two-digit multiplication problems

Week of 01/26: Partial products practice of one-digit by two-digit multiplication problems then exploring how to solve two-digit by two-digit multiplication problems using partial products

I recently completed my MAT in elementary education, and my final placement was in a fourth grade math class. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching the content, and I had the opportunity to work with small groups of students on the multiplication strategies I am offering to teach in this course. Before student teaching, I was the children's and youth director at a church, and prior to this, I taught elementary students at an outdoor science school. My BA is in music performance with an emphasis in piano, so I have taught numerous piano students ranging from four years old to adults. Regardless of the content or age group with which I am working, I simply enjoy teaching. I hope I get the opportunity to work with your learner, too.
