Class Experience

US Grade 5
We will focus on the Common Core reading standards for the upper elementary students. Each lesson, we will focus on a skill or skills that are beneficial to the curriculum taught in the classroom. (Finding the main idea, Summarizing, Figurative Language, Using context clues, and many more!)

Through these lessons, the following strategies will be implemented:

Day 1: Identify the main concept and supporting details of a text. Summarize the text. (Read pre-selected fictional text at 4th/5th grade reading levels together. We will work on annotating the text to find the main idea and details. From that, we will be able to summarize the text.

Day 2: Make predictions of what will happen next in a text in a fictional story. (Read pre-selected fictional text at 4th/5th grade reading levels together. Prior to reading, we will make predictions based off of titles, pictures, and text features. After reading; we will monitor the text and make constructive decisions on our predictions.

Day 3: Figurative Language (Similes, Metaphors, Idioms)-We will watch a quick video about figurative language. After the video, we will learn some common pieces of figurative language that we use and draw pictures to show representation. Lastly, we will play a charades game and decipher what we are acting out.

Day 4: Make connections to the text (Text-To-Self, Text-to-Text, Text-to-World) with non-fiction/informational text. We will read articles about topics such as (weather and sports) and come up with ways that these text relate to ourselves, other text we have read, or to our world around us.

During each lesson we will read passages together to enhance our learning and implement other exciting exercises to enhance our learning.

We will utilize many different learning styles through games, drawing, videos, and discussions.
