1-2 hours per week. Learners are expected to practice outside of class time. Beginners should aim for practicing 5-10 minutes each day, and as students advance their daily practice times can increase. Practice is most effective when it is spread out over the week (ideally 4-6 days each week) in shorter sessions, rather than only practicing once or twice for a longer time.Class Experience
Whether you've brand new to the violin or you've been playing for years, this one-on-one class will help you get where you want to go with your violin! All lessons and the pacing of learning new skills and music are completely customized to the learner. For brand-new beginners, I normally teach with a Suzuki-blended approach (using Suzuki Violin School books and methods), but I also have experience teaching with other method books, including All For Strings, Essential Elements for Strings, and A Tune A Day. For students who are at an intermediate or advanced level, etudes and repertoire are selected based on the student's current level and future goals. We will set our goals for this 4-week class either before or during our first meeting. Topics and skills covered can include (depending on student's level): instrument care, proper violin and bow hold, techniques and troubleshooting for producing a good tone, left-hand fingering technique, playing music by rote or by ear, reading music, music theory, bowings and articulations (including legato, staccato, portato, spiccato, etc.), vibrato, shifting and playing in higher positions, double stops, performance preparation, and audition preparation. I believe that the main reason anyone takes the time to learn an instrument is to play beautiful music that they personally enjoy, so lessons for beginners are designed to put the focus on reaching the first goal of playing a real song, and as students advance, exercises, scales, and etudes are introduced to help develop the skills needed to play even more beautiful music. I also offer one on one lessons in a one-time format on Outschool: https://outschool.com/classes/one-time-11-private-violin-lesson-for-all-levels-aDDufXa1#us8SrooIAZ

Supply List
Learners will need their own violin and bow in good working condition in the correct size (if between sizes, it is best to go with the smaller size), rosin, a shoulder rest or foam pad (optional but highly recommended), tuner (free apps will work for this!), and assigned music (to be determined in lessons). If your learner does not already have an instrument, please feel free to contact me - I am more than happy to provide information about finding a good quality violin for your learner! The student or an adult should tune the violin before class to help maximize our class time. If you have never tuned a violin before, I am able to provide a video in the classroom to help you get started and am happy to provide some guidance during the first few minutes of each class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Music from California State University Northridge
I teach violin, viola, general music, and music theory - sometimes all at once!
I have been playing the violin for 30 years and teaching music for over 20 years. I learned how to play a variety of other instruments in college through my college studies, and I received my B.A. in music education in 2003. Right after that, I taught elementary school orchestras in Los Angeles for four years. Since then, I have been teaching violin and viola, mostly as private lessons but I love getting students together in groups, too!
I love music, of course, but I love teaching even more. If I wasn't teaching music, I would teach something else - anything else! - because there's no greater reward than watching those "aha" moments and making learning a joyful experience. However, I think teaching music is probably the most rewarding career that exists because there are so many benefits to studying music, and I get be a part of helping students grow in all those ways.
If I'm not teaching or practicing, there's a good chance I'm thinking about some chocolate or ice cream...or better yet, ice cream with chocolate in it! But I stay very busy between my husband, son, two crazy dogs, and one not-too-crazy cat, so there usually isn't much time left in my day to eat that chocolate ice cream!
