Class Experience

Beginner Level
In this class we will learn about four great African American artists. Originality and creativity will be encouraged. We learn techniques from each artist we study, and then do two pictures. In each lesson we will talk about the achievements in the visual arts and in life skills. We will look at their techniques in media. Each lesson has two completed art projects. Students will be using mixed media including watercolor paints, oil pastels, charcoal and markers.
For the first session, we will talk about the amazing achievements of Clementine Hunter. Examples would be looking at her paintings, her murals and her quilts. We will do a fabric design and a clothesline picture.
We look at George Washington Carver and do a botanical plant design and a graphic art poster. We will talk about the wonderful correlation of art and science; how Robert Fulton, Samuel Morse, and Rufus Porter were inventors and scientists like George Washington Carver. When studying Horace Pippin, we will do a "Holy Mountain" animal picture and a portrait. We will talk about American folk art and that Horace Pippin was not only a well-known folk artist, but a decorated hero in World War One as well. I have written classes for the National Black Homeschool Association and recently got a lesson accepted by the World War One Museum in Kansas City. My book "Teaching Geography through Art" is very popular as well. "Missouri Magazine" just informed me of publication of an article I wrote as well. I teach hands on art classes that combine art history, music and literature and make learning lots of fun. I have a B.S.E. from John Brown University and studied painting at Metropolitan in Denver and Sculpting at Southern Illinois University. I believe art should be encouraging and fun and most of all, connect to that little spark of originality that is in us all. Something fun and personal; I love to paint shoes and boots and create cartoon characters!
