US Grade 8 - 11
In this class we will read through Four, a collection of novellas and short stories in the Divergent series by Veronica Roth. Learners should have previously read the entire Divergent series (Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant) before taking this class. Students will complete the reading ahead of time and then we will meet together to discuss the book. Through our class discussions we will work on: -comprehension skills -analyzing the characters and their actions -making connections -discussing the author's purpose for including different events and characters in the book -comparing and contrasting different characters and events The teacher will use discussion questions to guide student conversations and discussions. Students are encouraged to jot down any questions or thoughts they have while reading to share with the class. Students will be encouraged to share their thoughts and feelings from the readings each session. We will meet twice a week for three weeks and follow the schedule below for reading the book. Class 1: "The Transfer" and "Careful, Tris" Class 2: "The Initiate" and "First Jumper-Tris" Class 3: "The Son" and "You Look Good, Tris" Class 4: "The Traitor" Please have the first two stories read before the first class. The "Tris" stories are the last three stories in the book and are all under 10 pages long. They retell key scenes in the Divergent series from Tobias's perspective, rather than creating a new plot. Due to their short length we will discuss them alongside one of the other stories. Make sure to double check the table of contents to make sure you are reading the correct stories for the class!
