In this weekly ongoing class students will learn about 1. What people in the following countries think about who the founder of their nation is 2. What they think about them. 3. What history says about them. 4. How they effect their respective nations today. The class goes through a different nation each week that students can join at any time. This is part 1 of many and the countries that will be covered are as follows: Week of Jan 4 - Albania - Scanderbeg - Good: His organization of the state into one national identity and his ability to defend his home against overwhelming odds. Troubling: His inability to get more help from potential allies. Week of Jan 11 - Afghanistan - Mirwais Hotak & Nazo Tokhi - Good: Organizing their people into independence and adapting to difficult circumstances. Troubling: Was unable to setup a long-lasting government. Week of Jan 18 - Andorra - Charlemagne - Good: Ability to unite a failing kingdom and his desire to promote educational reforms. Troubling: Did not have a good plan for after his death and also resorted to brutal repressions(though these were normal for this time period). Week of Jan 25 - Algeria - The people - Good: Fought for their freedom from colonial powers. Troubling: Resorted to very brutal attacks on innocents (although this is a hallmark of successful insurgencies) Week of Feb 1 - Argentina - Jose de San Martin - Good: Powerful strategist/organizer of men and was committed to his principles. Troubling: Inability to unite disparate allies. New Classes will be added as we progress. Class will be taught using a combination of pictures, lectures, and where possible, videos. Students will be asked to think about questions each week that relate to the founder, the nation, and how they can apply things they learned to their own lives. We will discuss those answers for the last half of class. Each week's class will be structured as follows: 10 minutes - Introduce the country 20-25 minutes - Tell the founders story. 5 minutes - Students think about their notes and how they could answer the listed questions. 15-20 minutes - Discuss the answers we had to the questions.
