Foundations of Writing: Lesson #1: Sentences

This class will teach students how to construct complete sentences ! Using a variety of colorful story cards as prompts, students will learn the fundamentals of sentence structure, focusing on subjects and predicates.

The Topics Covered will be:

Identifying Subjects & Predicates:

Students will learn to recognize the "who or what" (subject) and the "action or state of being" (predicate) in a sentence.

Building Sentences:

Using randomly drawn story card from a deck, students will practice constructing simple sentences, combining subjects and predicates.

Each session will be structured in a fun and interactive way:

1. Warm-Up Game (5 minutes): We'll start with a quick, engaging game that reinforces key concepts like identifying nouns and verbs.

2. Story Card Spark (10 minutes): A new story card will be drawn from the top of a deck of shuffled story cards to provide a picture prompt for sentence building.

3. Sentence Construction (15 minutes): We'll work together to identify the subject and predicate in the story cards and use those elements to build creative sentences.

4. Interactive Activity (10 minutes): Students will participate in a fun, collaborative story writing actvity

5. Wrap-up & Challenge (5 minutes): We'll finish with a short review of the session's key points and a creative challenge to complete at home using additional picture prompts.

IMPORTANT:

It’s important that parents fill out the student information section so that I know something about each student before the start of class. I feel that my students will be more motivated If I know about some of their interests.

Teamwork: I’ll pair students up to work together to encourage the sharing of ideas and strengthening social skills.

Interactive Games: Fun and engaging exercises involving identifying nouns and verbs will be incorporated to make learning fun and reinforce sentence structure concepts.

My teaching style is supportive, encouraging and entertaining. I believe in creating a safe and positive learning environment where students feel comfortable exploring their ideas and making mistakes. I'm here to guide students along the way, celebrate their successes, and most of all get them excited about writing.

My students will interact with me throughout the entire class. I will respond to each student with feedback that pertains specifically to them. There will be plenty of opportunities for students to share their work, ask questions, and receive individual feedback. I intentionally limited the class size to an even number of students so that students can have a partner to work with. If there are an odd of number of students I will pair up with a student or have one group of 3 partners.

New York Teaching Certificate in Special Education
As a New York City-based Special Educator, I’ve dedicated my career to supporting children with unique learning needs. My experience as an Early Interventionist in NYC allowed me to work closely with families of young children diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, ADD, ODD, and other developmental disorders. Additionally, my time as an English Teacher in Japan deepened my understanding of diverse learning styles and cultural differences. Inspired by these experiences, I chose to homeschool my children.

While my public school experience provided a solid foundation, I realized that traditional schooling wasn't the best fit for my child. I sought a more personalized approach that would allow him to discover his unique talents and potential. From my own experience in public and private schools, I knew that a one-size-fits-all approach wouldn't meet his individual needs.

Homeschooling became the answer. It allowed me to create a customized learning environment tailored to my child's strengths and weaknesses. I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of individualized education, as my child flourished and developed a love of learning.

I'm offering this same personalized approach to Outschool. I teach a writing class for reluctant writers who need help getting started writing. I teach a fun daily spelling dictation because kids need the basics still and I also teach social skills classes for kids who need it. I’ll be adding new classes regularly so please have a look. Let's work together to unlock your child's full potential.
