Class Experience

This class will provide a foundation in traditional studio art techniques. During the first three weeks, we will begin with basic shapes, light and shadow, and composition, and then we will move on to cover 1 and 2 point perspective. In the latter four weeks, we will cover portraits and the figure, color mixing and color theory, and finish out with a final painting assignment, which students will complete over the course of the final two weeks. Each week we will have a live meeting that will consist of an informal discussion, a slide lecture and/or tutorial, and ending with an exercise. A homework assignment will be turned in to me by the end of the week, and I will provide private feedback before the next class meeting. The final class will consist of a group critique. I will work with each individual to unlock their best potential. No previous art education is needed! This class is ideal for teens who have a passion for drawing and are ready to get serious and develop their skills. It will be structured similarly to college-level studio art courses, giving a jumpstart to anyone who is interested in attending an art school. This course in intended to cover the building blocks of traditional art within a positive and encouraging environment!

Learning Goals

In this class, students will begin on the journey of a formal art education. This course is meant to provide an overview of the elements of art: line, shape, color, texture and space. At the end, students should feel more confident drawing and painting from observation, and have a foundation on which to build further artistic studies.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a working artist, and I teach art classes to teens and preteens with a passion for art!
I hold a BFA in Painting from Pratt Institute (2013), and I completed an apprenticeship training in Scenic Painting for Theater at The Juilliard School (2017). I am classically trained in traditional painting techniques, which I use in my own studio practice to create conceptual mixed media work. I want to pass on my skills and knowledge to young artists who are looking for the tools to express themselves. My focus is on the building blocks of academic art, while encouraging artistic exploration and freedom. I believe in learning the rules so that you can break them!
I teach out of my home studio in Brooklyn, NY, which I share with my one-eyed silver cat, Gertrude.
