Class Experience

Hello and welcome!
Phonological awareness is the ability to recognize, identify, and manipulate sounds in spoken language, without visual representation of letters. These skills are greatly tied to a child's ability to read. This interactive class will rely on listening, verbal, and hand movement activities. This class is geared toward beginning and/or struggling readers.
**Please note that there will be no writing or reading of visually printed words.

In this ongoing class, students will learn and practice phonological awareness skills through interactive, auditory and verbal word play with hand movements. For part of the lesson, we will use a workmat (provided) to segment and blend spoken sounds into words. Your child will need a few small items, which we will use to represent the sounds. (buttons, coins, cheerios, lego, etc.)

Lesson Content:
*Alphabet Flashcards - Each lesson begins with a quick practice of alphabet flashcards. We will say the letter and sound it makes. This is the only part of our lesson that contains visual letters. I won't be teaching letter/sounds explicitly, as this is a very quick warm up activity. **It is not required that children know all of the letters and sounds.
*Rhyming - Identifying and producing rhyming words
*Counting words in a sentence
*Compound words, syllables, onset + rime
*Phonemic Awareness (individual sounds within words) - blending, segmenting, isolating, adding, deleting, and substituting sounds

This class is appropriate for:
*Learners who are entering a 1st grade program and need to solidify/review Kindergarten reading skills
*If your child is already reading fluently, then this class would not be appropriate.

*IMPORTANT NOTE:
This is an ongoing weekly subscription class. You can join for one class or continue for several weeks. You will be automatically charged each Sunday for the following week once you've subscribed. When you want to unsubscribe, be sure to do so before Sunday so you won't be charged for the following week.
If a class isn’t scheduled for a particular day, you will not be charged.
If your child misses a live class, a video of our recorded class will be available for your child to follow along with.

Learning Goals

Students will develop phonological awareness skills, including rhyming, compound words, syllables, onset and rime, as well as phonemic awareness skills (blending, segmenting, isolating, adding, deleting, and substituting phonemes.)

Hello and welcome! My name is Ms. Sarah. I am a credentialed teacher with 18 years of experience teaching in the public, private, and online school settings. Most of my years spent teaching have been in first grade, which I love. I enjoy teaching Math, Reading, Science, and Social Studies. I have a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with specialization in Early Childhood. I also have a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction.

I like to teach lessons that are interactive, engaging, meaningful, and fun. I want students to not be afraid to take risks in learning. Even if they don’t get the correct answer right away, that’s ok, as long as they try their best. Learning is an ongoing process and everybody learns at different rates and through different methods and styles.

I love animals and I have lots of pets, including dogs, birds, and bunnies. I also enjoy baking, tap dancing, and learning new things. I look forward to seeing you in my classroom!
