Welcome to Fortnite: Game Design, a course that is perfect for kids in grades 6-10 who have a love for 3D video games and want to learn how to create them. In this course, we will provide a basic introduction to game design using Fortnite's Creative Mode. Our class is designed with a student-centered approach that emphasizes collaborative projects to keep the class fun and engaging. We have five class meetings that are three hours long each, giving ample time for learners to develop their skills. We'll begin by introducing the fundamentals of 3D first-person shooter (FPS) design principles, which will serve as the foundation for the rest of the course. We'll hit the basics while focusing on variables, functions, conditional statements, loops, and triggers, which are essential concepts in game development. Our daily build challenges will help learners practice their design skills, providing them with a feeling of what it's like to be a real game developer. Throughout the course, learners will develop 3D worlds, puzzles, and problems, exploring how to build 3D game worlds. They will create a puzzle in a game environment that incorporates the use of variables, understand collision detection, and create an obstacle course with challenges that incorporate collision detection, events, and triggers. They will also learn about conditional statements and functions and create puzzles that incorporate these concepts. Lastly, learners will learn about loops and apply their understanding of loops as a means of musical composition in the context of a game. We'll be using a combination of teaching styles, including lectures, games, slides, and discussions. There will be plenty of interaction opportunities for learners with their peers and instructors, ensuring that they receive personalized feedback and support. No prior experience is necessary for learners to join this course. However, learners should have an interest in game design and be willing to engage in collaborative projects. We recommend that learners have basic computer skills and access to a computer with Fortnite's Creative Mode installed. Day 1 - Students will - Demonstrate an understanding of variables as a concept, Apply the understanding of variables in the context of a game, Create a puzzle in a game environment that incorporates the use of variables. Day 2 - Students will - Demonstrate an understanding of collision detection and events as computer science concepts, Apply the understanding of collision, triggers, and events in the context of a game, Create an obstacle course with challenges that incorporate the use of collision detection, events, and triggers. Day 3 - Students will - Demonstrate an understanding of loops as a computer science concept, Apply an understanding of loops as a means of musical composition in the context of a game, Create a looping musical score as background music in a game. Day 4 - Students will - - Demonstrate an understanding of conditional statements as a concept, Demonstrate an understanding of conditional statements as a concept, Apply the understanding of conditional statements in the context of a game, Create a puzzle in a game environment that incorporates the use of conditional statements. Day 5 - Students will -Demonstrate an understanding of functions as a computer science concept, Apply the understanding of functions in the context of a game, Create a puzzle in a game environment that incorporates the use of functions. Will learn about constructive feedback and give fellow campers some ideas on how to improve their games. In conclusion, if your child is interested in game design and wants to learn how to create 3D games using Fortnite's Creative Mode, then our course is perfect for them. With our comprehensive curriculum, student-centered approach, and emphasis on collaboration, we're confident that learners will develop a love for game design and leave with the skills needed to pursue their interests further.
