Some of the figures described in this class faced severe discrimination during their lives. Images of lynching victims are powerful and will be treated with the respect they deserve.

In addition, the class will listen to music from Marian Anderson that requires part of a youtube video of Anderson singing at her famous Lincoln Memorial concert. The students need not access this themselves, however; it is embedded in the slideshow I use when teaching the material.
Primary sources include the autobiography of Frederick Douglass, essays written by W.E.B. DuBois, and video of Marian Anderson singing (Example - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XF9Quk0QhSE).

Secondary sources include, for example, Barbara Ransby's biography of Ella Baker, "Ella Baker and the Black Freedom Movement: A Radical Democratic Vision," and "Southern Horrors and Other Writings; The Anti-Lynching Campaign of Ida B. Wells, 1892-1900."
