Class Experience
***PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS AN IN-DEPTH, MULTI-WEEK FLEX CLASS, COVERING STEP-BY-STEP TECHNIQUE AND TOOL INSTRUCTION. THERE ARE NO LIVE CLASSES. PLEASE READ BELOW TO SEE EACH WEEK’S CONTENT*** This class utilizes state-of-the-art, screen-sharing technology, using Zoom, and YouTube, which allows students to see and hear Mr. Niven teaching, while watching him draw directly on his iPad screen. Mr. Niven’s teaching style is fun and relaxed, yet motivating, which allows students to feel comfortable, and confident. Bryan builds on principles, techniques and processes, using real-world examples, and motivates his students to use the knowledge gained in class, to create on their own. This class DOES NOT require any prerequisites since the principles/techniques needed to complete the class are taught DURING the lesson*** *Lesson length may vary, but each class is on average, around 20-30 minutes. This class time is based on teacher research, and student/parent feedback, to keep lessons short and digestible, while keeping them motivated and excited to learn more without feeling overwhelmed. Week 1: During the first week students will illustrate the forest background trees, and night sky. Week 2: The second week we illustrate the moon, foreground trees, and forest ground. Week 3: The third week covers how to draw the campfire. Week 4: The final week focuses on animating the fire, smoke, and sparks, and after the animation is complete students will learn how to export, and save the animation. As a bonus Mr. Niven will also showcase, (demonstration purposes only, not instruction), how to add sound and text using a third party video editor. A new link to each lesson will be posted each week. If a student has a question at any time, they can simply message Mr. Niven using the text and/or video messaging through the Outschool classroom. After reviewing any question/s Mr. Niven will then provide solutions through the classroom. Mr. Niven can also provide individual feedback using the Outschool classroom via posts, including chat AND the recording feature if desired. This is great for students as it provides more visual connection with Mr. Niven. Happy finding, and happy drawing! Happy drawing!

Parental Guidance
This class requires the iPad app: Procreate. It is a one time download, (rather than a subscription), and no account is needed, (other than an Apple ID, to provide access to the Apple App. Store. Procreate is an extremely popular, world-wide image creation/editing app like Photoshop. The lessons are directly posted to the Outschool classroom, and/or YouTube, using hyperlinks for access.
Supply List
Students MUST have Procreate downloaded from the App Store, on an iPad prior to class. At the time of this writing Procreate was listed at $9.99. This class can be done on either iPad or iPhone, thought the screen size can be a challenge on the iPhone. Mr. Niven recommends using a stylus that supports pressure sensitivity for best results, but is NOT required to complete the class. For best results with brushes, and added control, Mr. Niven HIGHLY recommends Apple Pencil, as it is BY FAR the best stylus for iPad. Two other brands of stylus Mr. Niven recommends are Wacom Bamboo Fineline or Sketch, and Adonit. Both brands support pressure sensitivity on iPad and iPhone. For more information on software and hardware, including information about Procreate, as well as compatibility, and recommendations for various iPads, or iPhones and styli that support Procreate, please consider enrolling in Mr. Niven’s Digital Art Orientation, for Students and Parents.
