1 hour per week. Students will intermittently be given optional, short assignments to complete outside of class meeting times. These assignments will be given to help introduce new topics, practice skills learned, and/or reinforce learning goals.Assessment
Formative assessments will be given regularly in each class meeting to assess student learning and connections. There will be a total of 8 quizzes and two optional exams; a midterm and a final exam. These quizzes and exams will be given via Google Forms and are optional as part of the course, but available for those who would like assessment data. All quiz and exam data will be available upon parent request.Grading
All homework, quizzes and exams are optional, per the preferences of each family. If assignments are completed, grades can be recorded in the digital notebook (provided in the course). If requested, a formal grade report will be provided at the conclusion of the course.Class Experience

Topics Covered: Observation skills Evidence and the crime-scene Crime Scene Sketches The study of hair Identifying Fingerprint Patterns Lifting and Matching Fingerprints Blood and blood spatter Forensic anthropology Mid-term Review and Exam Drug identification and toxicology Toxicology Lab DNA Profiling DNA Profiling Lab Death: Meaning, Manner, Mechanism, Cause and Time Case Studies Final Review and Exam *Careers in Forensics & Case studies included throughout lessons* This course includes aspects from biology, earth science, physics, chemistry, and mathematics; as they relate to the study and implementation of forensic science. This class is part 1 of a 2 part forensic science course. Each class meeting in this course will be structured using the 5 e model of lesson planning. The 5 Es are: Engage Explore Explain Elaborate Evaluate This model allows for frequent assessment and student interaction. Each lesson will include some form of lecture instruction using slides, images and/or video clips; and a variety of short, formative assessments such as multiple-choice questions, discussion, collaboration boards, matching games, drawing, writing activities, and interactive virtual lab skills activities. This course will be taught using Nearpod lessons, which allows for the interaction mentioned above. If your student will be using a tablet or phone, they will need to download the free Nearpod app, which can be found in the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. I will be posting a link to the Nearpod website and a code into the chat box when class starts and students using a computer will be able to access the lesson via the link or by going to the Nearpod website and entering in the code.

-Explain how hair can be used in a forensic investigation
-Describe the characteristics of fingerprints and identify the main types of fingerprints
-Describe how to determine blood type and how to conduct a blood spatter analysis
-Define and describe the goals and practices of toxicology
-Compare handwriting exemplars to questioned documents using 12 specific characteristics
-Identify distinguishing characteristics of skeletal remains and describe how a person’s approximate age, height and sex assigned at birth can be determinedSyllabus

Parental Guidance
The Forensic Science Series of classes that I teach will sometimes include information about actual case studies and crimes, which could include violent crimes. I will attempt to present all information in an age-sensitive and respectful manner. If you have any questions or concerns about specific information in each class, please message me prior to enrolling your student.

The information for this course is guided by the Cengage Textbook "Forensic Science: Fundamentals and Investigations".
