Forensic Science Semester 1 (10 Week)
In this 10 week course, students will explore forensic science. Students will be introduced to forensic science techniques, case studies, and careers in forensics; and will have opportunities for critical thinking and discussion.

Class Experience
This class is taught in English.
By the end of this course students will be able to... Relate observation skills to their use in forensic science -Summarize the seven steps of crime-scene investigation -Explain how hair can be used in a forensic investigation -Describe the characteristics of fingerprints and identify the main types of fingerprints -Describe how to determine blood type and how to conduct a blood spatter analysis -Define and describe the goals and practices of toxicology -Compare handwriting exemplars to questioned documents using 12 specific characteristics -Identify distinguishing characteristics of skeletal remains and describe how a person’s approximate age, height and sex assigned at birth can be determined
Students will intermittently be given short assignments to complete outside of class meeting times. These assignments will be given to help introduce new topics, practice skills learned, and/or reinforce learning goals.
Students will benefit from having but are not required to have: -paper and pencil/pen
Formative assessments will be given regularly in each class meeting to assess student learning and connections. There will be a total of 8 quizzes and two optional exams; a midterm and a final exam. These quizzes and exams will be given via Google Forms and are optional as part of the course, but available for those who would like assessment data. All quiz and exam data will be available upon parent request.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
The Forensic Science Series of classes that I teach will sometimes include information about actual case studies and crimes, which could include violent crimes. I will attempt to present all information in an age-sensitive and respectful manner. If you have any questions or concerns about specific information in each class, please message me prior to enrolling your student.
No materials are required for purchase for this course. This class will utilize free online resources including the Outschool classroom, Nearpod and Kahoot. If any other websites are referenced, they will be posted in the Outschool classroom. The information for this course is guided by the Cengage Textbook "Forensic Science: Fundamentals and Investigations".
