Class Experience

US Grade 5
We will focus on the Common Core reading standards for the fifth grade students. Each lesson, we will focus on a skill that is beneficial to the curriculum taught in the classroom. (Finding the Main Idea, Summarizing, Determining the Theme, Compare/Contrast, Using Context Clues). We will use Newsela, Readworks passages for our reading.

Through these lessons, the following strategies will be implemented:

Session 1: Identify the main concept and supporting details of a text (Finding the Main Idea). Using pre-selected fictional and informational text, we will work on the strategy to determine the main idea and supporting details.

Session 2: Summarize the text. (Read pre-selected fictional text at the 5th grade reading levels together. We will work on annotating the text to find the main idea and details; as learned from previous lesson. From that, we will be able to SUMMARIZE the text.

Session 3: Determine the Theme. Every story has a theme; we will read short stories together to determine the theme as well as discover what theme means.

Session 4: Compare and Contrast. Looking at a variety of text, we will use Venn diagrams to compare and contrast fictional and informational stories.

Session 5: Using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words. We will read aloud Baloney Henry P.; in this story there are many unknown words. Students will have to decipher their meaning by using the clues in the pictures, their inferencing skills, and the text around the words to help them decide what it means! We will find out at the end what each word means!

Session 6: Kahoot! We will play a Kahoot! game to practice all of the skills we have been learning about during the past 3 weeks. Please bring 2 devices to class to play the game!

During each lesson we will read passages together to enhance our learning and implement other exciting exercises to enhance our learning.

We will utilize many different learning styles through games, drawing, videos, and discussions.
