Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
This class will look at the biology of the Mako Shark, including the streamlined design and features that make this shark the fastest in the ocean. Hunting and jumping abilities will also be discussed, as well as fishing and tagging techniques. The class will be a combination of physical displays such as jaws, teeth, and tagging equipment, a PowerPoint about the specifics of the two Mako species, and personal accounts of the interactions that I have had fishing and tagging Makos for over 33 years.

Learning Goals

By the end of this class, students will be able to identify basic structures of the Mako Shark and also be able to state specifics as to what sets the Mako Shark apart from other shark species.

I am a Science Teacher with 24 years of experience in public schools. I have degrees in Marine Science, Natural Science, and Earth Science Education. Science is a passion that I have had since I was a boy. Learning Science should be fun,.... because SCIENCE is FUN ! I teach anything related to my degrees, such as Astronomy, Space Science, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Rocks and Minerals, Weather, Plate Tectonics, etc. with added courses on methods of data presentation such as Excel and PowerPoint. I have also taught Advanced Research Methods such as DNA Extraction, PCR, and Gel Electrophoresis. I am a huge nerd with Lord of the Rings, Marvel, Image, and D.C. Comics, and Science Fiction being my hobbies, along with reading, hiking, fishing, drawing, and model building. Having tagged sharks for 33 years, I am something of a "Shark Nerd" as well. I have taught science to students in grades 5 - 12, ran science fairs for elementary, middle, and high school students, and taught them presentation skills. I am very happy to be joining Outschool and look forward to working with students sharing the wonders of science !!!
