This class is an ongoing weekly private lesson for flutists of any age or ability level. Each lesson will be customized to meet the needs of the individual musician (I.E., learning finger placements for beginners vs. improvisation/theory for advanced players). *If no time slot works for you, message me to set an alternate time! Although lessons will vary from week-to-week depending on the musician's individual needs, we will focus on the following skills: Breathing and Body, Embouchure,...
Breathing and Body: Strengthen your lungs, adapt hand and body positions, strategic breaths Embouchure: Consistency, pitch bending, form Tone: Finding the "sweet spot," vibrato, multiple octaves, tuning Basic Technique: Finger placements, alternate fingerings, scales, thirds, tuning, articulation exercises Theory & History: Reading music, historical context, term definition Etudes: Technical passages, technical development, tone development Solos & Specific Works: The "standards," school assignments, audition preparation, personal favorites Expression: Expressive markings, breathing, dynamics, vibrato, improvisation
I am a professionally trained flutist with experience performing in various settings such as concert band, orchestra, theater, marching band, and solo performance. I have taught private lessons for over a decade and continue to perform in my community as an active musician. I am a certified K-12 teacher and have taken additional classes on small/one-on-one coaching sessions.
Students will leave each lesson with a self-made and agreed upon goal to meet before our next lesson. They will be provided with the feedback and resources necessary to aid them in reaching their goal. There will be no penalties for a goal that is not "perfected," but sincere effort (practice time!) must be seen. If it is apparent a student is not practicing or making progress, I will set the weekly goals.
Additional apps, resources, and supplies will be discussed in lessons and completely free of charge. This might include a specific tuning application, an online archive, etc..
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
We will utilize multiple etudes, books, and literature. This will be provided by the instructor (or discussed for certain advanced players).
