Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Class 1: Students learn about types of exceptionalities, ableism, and psychological tests (and their validity). Students are assigned to teams (team Charlie and Team Algernon) and perform psychological tests (mazes and inkblots). Note: I am not a psychologist and these tests are purely for fun, not for diagnosis purposes.

Homework: Read Short Story (pgs. 351-365; progress report 1-April 27)

Class 2: Quick Reading Quiz. Discuss characters, key vocab, play comprehension game, discuss ethics of science, paragraph writing practice, evidence study. Charlie Before Chart.

Homework: Read pgs 366-378 (end)

Class 3: Quick Reading Quiz. Discuss and complete Charlie After, comprehension/analysis questions, changes in Charlie's writing, tone, and theme. Character tweets activity.
Learning Goals
Students will be more aware of exceptionality in others and develop empathy and understanding for others.

Students will be exposed to ethics in the medical world, particularly psychology.

Students will be able to cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

Students will be able to determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.
