Flexible Schedule: Cursive Writing, Drawing, Art Projects, and Challenges!
What's included
Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
*This is a flexible schedule class. There will be weekly assignments, and learners will be asked to sent in photographs or videos of their writing, drawings, and projects for feedback, but there will be no live meetings for this course. Learning cursive is great for your brain! Research has shown that writing in cursive stimulates different parts of the brain than writing in print or typing. Writing in cursive also increases fine motor skills, as well as helps readers learn how to pronounce letter blends. Using the D'Nealian Handwriting method (where the letters are slanted slightly to the right as opposed to straight up and down), students will learn the fundamentals of writing letters in cursive. Learners will work on the joining strokes required to turn most manuscript letters into cursive. We will warm up with practicing these strokes before each letter. Through repetition and practicing the fundamentals, your learner will see progress in their cursive writing. Since most letters are made with one continuous stroke, children using the D'Nealian method establish a smooth, rhythmic flow of writing from the beginning. Letters are not taught in alphabetical order, but rather by similarity of formation. As they learn more letters, they'll build on what they have learned and be able to write more words. This class is designed for busy learners who are learning cursive for the first time, or those would just like some extra practice. The goal is for learners to greatly improve their personal legibility - practice does not make perfect, but rather progress. Each Monday and Tuesday, the instructional videos and assignments will be posted in the classroom. The videos are short, designed for busy learners who may not have the time to sit and watch a long video in one sitting. The videos range from 3 - 5 minutes long, and each week will have at least 10 videos for your learner to watch and follow along with. Additional videos for further practice will be posted on Wednesday's. Learners will then be able to complete the assignments/follow the handwriting tutorials at their convenience. By the end of six weeks, learners will have practiced all 26 letters, and will have the skills needed to connect their cursive letters to one another to spell their own words. As well as being encouraged to message their work to me for private feedback throughout the week (sending pictures of their handwriting pages for encouragement and further guidance/instruction as needed), there will be a classroom post for learners to upload pictures or videos of their completed handwriting pages. Learners are encouraged to compliment and uplift their peers on their cursive efforts as well through commenting on classroom posts.
Learning Goals
Learners will leave this course being able to write all lowercase and uppercase letters in cursive, and have the skills needed to connect all of the letters to form words. Learners will practice using the growth mindset throughout this course, growing confidence through art activities, mindfulness questions, and cursive practice.
