Class Experience

In this course, elementary and middle school-aged students will learn about the seven elements of art (line, shape, form, value, color, texture, and space). The elements of art are the most basic parts of any artwork and it is crucial for students to understand how to incorporate these into their artwork in order to be successful art students. No prior knowledge is required for this course.

Each session will concentrate on one of the elements of art and a small project will be assigned to practice using that element. Students will begin by watching one or more videos about the element of art that we are concentrating on. Next, students will practice using the element of art using worksheets (students will need to print these). Following the practice activities, students will watch a step-by-step video demonstrating the steps to creating an artwork based on the element of art we are focusing on. Each week, students will complete their projects at home. Upon completing their project, students will upload their practice activities and completed artwork to the classroom. Students will be guided with critique questions to provide feedback to their class peers in the classroom. The last session of the course is designated for reviewing and critiquing a culminating project.

Homework will include work time on art projects and will include practicing art exercises to help with projects. Also, students will be required to participate in discussions and critiques in the classroom.

More details regarding post requirements will be given at the beginning of the course.

Learners are also encouraged to offer suggestions and ideas regarding artwork.

*Flex Class Office Hours - I will have one hour (one 60-minute session, or two 30-minute sessions) per week. During this time, I will be on Zoom and available for questions or to help students with their work. Students may also email me with questions if necessary. Office hour schedule will be provided at the beginning of the course.

*Certificates of completion are available upon request. Learners needing a certificate are required to complete each part of the course.

I am passionate about students learning the elements of art and principles of design in order to give them the proper framework for creating successful works of art. With this knowledge, students can then add their own personal style and ideas to make truly original works of art. The elements of art and principles of design help to give a more concrete approach to art-making which in turn, allows more students to feel successful making art. Any students planning to progress through any levels of art should have this knowledge.

I teach this course yearly at the summer camp that I hold at my art studio and students are thrilled with the work that they are able to complete during this course.
