Class Experience

***UNIT 1 ***
In this 4 week- (monthly) FLEX class, learners will learn skills and strategies to identify, listen, read, spell and write sight words at the Kindergarten level using Nearpod, working at their own pace in each lesson. Sight Words are any words a reader can identify automatically. That includes words beyond the regular sight word lists. This class will teach students skill and strategies on how to help students read these words with more automaticity.

By the end of this 4 week, FLEX course, learners will have acquired 20 new Kindergarten sight words. Each week's lesson will include an interactive lesson, including teacher instructions, and teacher videos to help guide the learner through their lesson.

Each section of this course will include 20 new / different words from Kindergarten Sight Word Lists. We will focus on 5 new sight words per week.

List of each month's course are listed below. Each lesson will utilize the app, NEARPOD. Nearpod is a free app that is accessible on a different device, or split screen on a computer. Nearpod is required for this FLEX course. Each Monday, a link for the lesson will be posted on the classroom page and messaged to each student. These links will be Self-Paced, (each student can work at their own pace, or review the lesson as many times as they choose).

Course Outline: At the beginning of each class, learners will engage with the words and our weekly story using a matching game. Learners will look for words or characters they recognize.

Learners will then learn each sight word, one at a time. Learners will focus on listening to the sounds in the words. Learners will practice segmenting the sounds using sound boxes and practice blending the sounds together. Learners practice identifying sounds and sound patterns in words using multi-sensory strategies (including different movements). Learners will practice spelling and writing the words, while identifying different spelling and sounds using Orthographic mapping (a skill to build strong decoding skills).

Leaners will listen to a story based on our favorite Dinosaurs, using fun and silly characters. Learners will identify current or past sight words within the story. Learners are invited to read with the teacher or listen to the story. Teachers will ask comprehension questions about the story throughout the lesson.

At the end of class, learners will participate in a "Time to Climb" racing game, answering comprehension questions from the story read during class. Learners will finish class with a class cheer, cheering everyone for a great job done in class.

Here is a list of focus words for each week.

Weekly Word Sets
Week 1: to, have, is, play, come
Week 2: on, be, big, one, has
Week 3: you, are, this, for, here
Week 4: can, the, say, bye, were

At the end of each week, the teacher will post practice sheets for each of the words practiced during the week for further review! This is a fun, interactive class that teaches us to explore about dinosaurs and their homes while learning our sight words!

A new FLEX section (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) of this class with new words, will be posted at the beginning of each month. Look for a new section each month.

Learning Goals

Learners will acquire new sight words with each lesson to build their reading and writing skills. Sight Words are words that we can read with automaticity. This class will teach strategies and skills to help identify sounds in words, building that automaticity. The more fluent leaners are in their sight word acquisition, the more fluent and independent they are able to read.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Victoria. I am a certified teacher! I have been in education for 8 years. 6 years in the classroom and the last 2 years also online. I love teaching, and have experience working with students from first grade through the high school level. I am currently teaching in high school with students learning English as a new language.

I have a bachelors degree in Elementary Education, and a masters degree in Curriculum and instruction from UNLV. I love working and creating curriculum for my students that best meets their needs.

I live in New York, near Niagara Falls, but I am from Las Vegas. I have experience owning a small business. I am also involved in sports and have taught dance classes. I love baking, planning parties and my favorite color is pink, blush pink though, not bright pink!

I have a 2-year-old boy, Noah and a husband in law enforcement. And I cant forget to mention my 2 pups, Lola and Phoenix.

I have a lot of experience working with students in a small group setting. A lot of my time and experience teaching has been focused on creating curriculum that meets student’s individual needs. I love creating new ways to make curriculum accessible to students.

I think learning should be fun, engaging and a little messy! Students should be provided with as many opportunities as possible to engage and learn. I think the best way to learn is to teach. That is why, in my classroom, you will see ample time for students to share their own thoughts, ideas and projects. I follow an “I Do.. You Watch, You Try... I Help, You Do.. I Watch” teaching model. That means, first, I show you and model. Then, we do it together. After students have the opportunity to try themselves… It looks a little something like this…..

My classroom will provide a safe space for students to feel comfortable to share what they have learned, teach other students something they know and have fun. My goal is for students to feel comfortable in the classroom, which in turns, teaches them to try their best.

You will see lessons aligned with the Common Core curriculum. I have worked with Common Core throughout my entire teaching experience, so if there is a specific standard you would like us to focus on, I can absolutely provide that for your student.

I love incorporating technology in the classroom. You might see classes using the app, Nearpod. This is a fun, interactive app that allows students to play games, and have hands-on experiences with their lessons!

My hope is to create a loving, engaging and exciting community for you and your learner. I hope to see you and your learner in the classroom.
