Each ScratchJr project will take approximately one hour to complete. Students will draw projects independently but share them with the group weekly. Video discussions should be kept to 1-2 minutes in length and may take 15 minutes to create and upload into the Outschool classroom.Class Experience
US Grade 1 - 2
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Have you been coding in ScratchJr and wondering how to make interesting characters yourself? If so, you found a great place to start. ************************************* This class is designed for all levels of Scratch Jr coders. Beginners are welcome. iOS devices are preferred over android as the touch calibration within the app is frustrating for many students. If an iOS device is not available, a computer would be the next best thing. Students may need assistance with mouse skills if the computer is not a touch screen. ************************************* Each week a new project will be explored to build the student's confidence in drawing in ScratchJr. Each student will be able to share their own ideas with the group to achieve the project objective. How will we interact? In the Outschool classroom, you will be able to ask questions, share photos and comment on each other's work. We will collaborate by responding to weekly polls and creating classroom video posts for one another discussing "roses and thorns". Learners can also suggest drawing ideas for the group to try. Remember to keep your private information private - for example, no last names, home cities, or gaming handles! I'd also love for you to share any background or questions you have in this topic area. As a reminder, when posting in the classroom remember to follow the Outschool guidelines to be kind, safe, and respectful: https://static.outschool.com/Outschool+Participation+Guidelines.pdf Students will be required to post questions and submit photos or videos of their projects. This allows each student to gain inspiration and learn from one another. The group will reflect on their own work as well as their peer's work on a weekly basis. Students will engage in weekly polls. Beginning of each week, students will receive a prerecorded video on Sundays with instructions on how to draw a new character. Students will follow along on their own devices in ScratchJr and pause as needed. The project is to be completed and posted to the classroom on Wednesday. This can be a photo/screenshot of the character they drew. Thursday is for reflection. Students can type a comment or post a video explaining how they felt about the project that week. What was challenging for them? What was one thing they were proud of? They can use kind words to talk about each other's projects. We will also have our class poll posted. Friday students will post any questions or suggestions they have. Week 1: Explore the paint editor in ScratchJr. Students will be able to create something on their own after learning how to use the CIRCLE, TRIANGLE, SQUARE, and LINE tools within ScratchJr. We will also cover DRAGGING, CUTTING, PAINTING, STAMPING, and ROTATING. Class Poll: How long have you been coding in ScatchJr Share your work in the classroom. Week 2: Draw your interpretation of Mirabel Use Scratch JR paint editor to draw your own interpretation of Mirabel. The teacher will provide a video to follow along step by step. You can customize the design as you feel is best. Class Poll: Who is your favorite character? Share your work in the classroom. Week 3: Draw your interpretation of Bruno Class Poll: Who was more challenging to design in ScratchJr? Use Scratch JR paint editor to draw your own interpretation of Bruno. The teacher will provide a video to follow along step by step. You can customize the design as you feel is best. Share your work in the classroom. Week 4: Draw your interpretation of Casa Madrigal Class Poll: What do you want your animation to do? Use Scratch JR paint editor to draw your own interpretation of Casa Madrigal. The teacher will provide a video to follow along step by step. You can customize the design as you feel is best. Share your work in the classroom. Week 5: Code an Animation Show and Tell: Share your final project with the class. Comment on other students' projects via video post and share 1 thing you liked. Comment with your "roses and thorns". Share a rose: One thing you enjoyed about this project. Share a thorn: One thing you found challenging. We will create a group board in class showing everyone's Roses and Thorns.
Learning Goals
To be able to use all the drawing tools within the ScratchJr editor. Students will understand how shapes can be used to build the foundation of most drawings.

Supply List
iPad with ScratchJr app installed would be best. Chromebook/Laptop is the next best but will require mouse skills if not a touchscreen. Android tablers have caused the most frustration with students as the touch calibration is off. This can be especially frustrating when drawing. Feel free to test your device in advance. When drawing, the "ink" should appear exactly where your finger/stylus/mouse pointer makes contact with the screen. It should not be offset by any distance. It is encouraged to have two devices. One device for watching the recording and a second device for coding. With a single device, a student will be switching from the video to the ScratchJr app and back and forth. For younger learners, this may cause some frustrations. Great teachers form strong relationships with their students by engaging them in the subjects they are passionate about. I have always been a logical thinker who enjoys science, math, technology, and engineering both for work and play.
I worked as an engineer for companies like Frito-Lay, Anheuser-Busch, Amgen as a consultant for many years improving their systems with automation and equipment. Once I became a parent, I began teaching extra-curricular classes as a way to have more time at home, but stay involved in subjects that bring me joy.
Realizing that by being warm, professional, and enthusiastic, I am able to engage students. My creative lessons and strong classroom presence help build student confidence while increasing interest in subjects that may otherwise seem intimidating.
