When your child is in a bad mood, could it have something to do with his/her thinking? Chances are YES! How our kids think about what is going on around them has an impact on their behaviors. When kids have unhelpful thinking, it can look like arguing, whining, withdrawal, or just plain mean behaviors. But what if your child knew how to catch his/her thoughts...
Students will learn: -To identify unhelpful thoughts and connect them to emotions -How to practice using the feeling thermometer as a tool for awareness and communication of thoughts -Why they benefit from choosing to be aware of their thoughts -How to use a thought swapping technique to stop the unhelpful thinking and replace it with more helpful thinking -How healthy thinking habits can be strengthened for well-being -An effective problem-solving strategy to increase optimism when facing a challenge
I believe resilience is a critical trait for anyone working toward being the best they can be, and it is something that can be strengthened like a muscle. I am personally committed to helping build resilient kids, and ultimately resilient families, in my own community and beyond. I have a background as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. However, most of my work has been as a Resiliency Skills Trainer with a program out of UCLA Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior. In that position, I taught several skill-building workshops with groups of kids (ages 3-13) and adults. I also worked with families individually. I taught the skills of emotion regulation (including healthy thinking styles), communication, goal setting, and problem-solving. I am excited to bring my background and personal style to Outschool so I can help you accomplish your goals. My approach to teaching resiliency skills with kids is especially unique because I focus on connecting with each child in a way that creates a FUN and ENGAGING learning environment! I can't wait to meet your child and begin learning together!
Each week I will ask students to complete the worksheets or activities that are included in the class lesson. Students will be encouraged to apply and practice the skills throughout the week in their day-to-day life, and share reflections of what they learned. There will be opportunity for weekly discussions in the Outschool classroom.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses Nearpod. A link will be provided in the classroom each week. There will be the option to print 1-3 PDF's each week, but is not required.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
No live meetings, and maybe some time outside of class.
Although the class is designed for kids to be able to participate independently without parent help, I encourage parents to listen in to the lessons or ask your child about what he/she learned so that the skills can be applied as a family for maximum benefit. Please feel free to reach out to me if you would like further guidance with the material.
