Flex Quest: A Whole New World
Dr. Sarah Evans
Join in this flexible schedule quest as students spend time at the International Space Station completing a top secret mission of using new technology, space knowledge, and imagination to create another planet.
A quest is a journey toward a specific goal, or an arduous search. A Whole New World is a class within the FlexQuest series, by Dr. Evans, which focuses on students' desires to thoroughly immerse into a subject and spend a longer time on creative projects and ideas. These learning goals will differ from student to student, and all of them are ongoing and not final, but they offer a general understanding of the objectives. -Mastery of the content at a pace appropriate to the student's ability. -Depth of learning that enhances logic and critical thinking development. -Practice of metacognitive skills. -Build creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. -Develop a sense of self-understanding within a cohort of same-aged peers. -Evolve problem solving ability. -Foster independent and self directed learning. -Develop relationships with other kids and practice related social skills.
I have over 15 years of experience teaching elementary aged students, and hold both a Ph.D. and a M.Ed in education. I also have a current license to teach PreK through sixth grade. My educational background includes extensive training in teaching core academic subjects, gifted/creative logic, and all manners of pedagogical methods. Personally, I am a gifted thinker and I am guiding my two young gifted children through their own learning journeys.
A Space Journal PDF will be provided to print. Pencil, and occasionally other school supplies such as paper, glue, tape, scissors and markers/colored pencils/crayons. Some activities will need additional, easy-to-find household supplies. *Please check the classroom description for each activity to see what supplies are needed.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Enrichment logic and creative thinking can often be challenging for some students. Students will be actively encouraged to think creatively so please make sure that your child understands this. The class pace will be faster due the nature of the teacher using gifted learning acceleration. It's meant to challenge student thinking and it may be uncomfortable to experience that "brain stretch" at first. Please stay in touch with me, during our Flexible session, and I will be happy to help your learner in any manner that I am able.
