Class Experience
In this class, learners will work through the first section of Alfred's Basic Piano Library Piano Lesson Book (Complete Level 1) and learn concepts like proper posture and finger position, finger numbers, basic rhythms, note letter names, basic dynamics, clefs, and begin reading music on the grand staff. This flex class is for students who have very little experience in music or those who understand basic musical concepts but prefer to move at a beginner's pace as they learn piano. Each week, I'll post a video that covers that week's topics. I'll use both my regular camera for talking to the learners and showing my hand position at an angle and a document viewer on top of my hands to show my hands and any activities clearly. At the end of the lesson, students will get a playing assignment, an optional worksheet, and play an interactive game. Students will be expected to record their playing portion of their assignment and either post it to the classroom or message it directly to me. I'll send students personalized feedback on their playing assignment and optional worksheet. Games are interactive and I hope your child will join in the fun! This class, while being asynchronous, still offers many opportunities for interaction including feedback on playing, feedback on worksheets, encouragement to classmates, an optional final recital, and weekly interactive games. This class will cover: Week One: Concepts Covered: posture, finger position, black keys, finger numbers, quarter notes/crotchets, half notes/minims, and whole notes/semibreves Songs: "Right and Left," "Left and Right," Merrily We Roll Along Optional Worksheet: Time to Count! Interactive Game: Music Math - I'll post music math problems with quarter notes (crotchets), half notes (minims), and whole notes (semi breves). Whoever gets the most music math problems right first wins! Week Two: Concepts Covered: middle C position, note letter names, introduction to dynamics, 4/4 time signature Songs: Batter Up, Our Clever Pup, The Ski Lift Optional Worksheet: The Time Signature Interactive Game: Completing the incomplete measures. I'll post incomplete measures in the classroom randomly throughout the week and students can complete them when they find them. Week Three: Concepts Covered: bass clef, treble clef, lines, and spaces Songs: Rain Rain, A Happy Song Optional Worksheet (2): The Bass Clef, The Treble Clef Interactive Game: Note Bingo! Week Four: Concepts Covered: the grand staff, c position, the interval of a second Songs: "Position C," Just a Second Optional Worksheet: C Position on the Grand Staff Interactive Activity: Recital videos! Teacher expertise and credentials
Ohio Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
After teaching music to students in grades preschool through university level for the past 15 years, I've learned that I love teaching music to everyone, regardless of age. Whether we're creating artwork while listening to (and learning about!) famous classical works, working one-on-one during lessons on beginner piano, trumpet, baritone, euphonium, tuba, or music theory, or participating in an interactive book reading, you're welcome in my virtual classroom.
A bit about me:
I have a unique career built around being a music teacher, performer, conductor, children's author, and entrepreneur. I earned a double bachelor's degree in music education and euphonium performance from Capital University, a master's degree in euphonium performance from the Royal Northern College of Music, and a doctor of musical arts in euphonium performance from Rutgers University. I'm certified by the state of Ohio to teach music to grades preschool through 12th grade. I've taught general music to grades preschool through college, group music theory to elementary through college level, and private lessons on beginner piano, most brass instruments, and music theory to students of all ages. As a performer, clinician, and conductor, I frequently travel to work and perform with various ensembles around the United States. Lastly, I became a children's author and entrepreneur because when my first son was born and I didn't see any kids' books about brass band (the ensemble I play in most), I decided to write one! In addition to being a music teacher and performer, I'm now the author of a children's book called, "Amy's Brass Band" which is available worldwide through Amazon. I live with my husband and two young sons, one of whom I homeschooled for the 2020-2021 school year.
In the classroom, I work hard to create a supportive environment that can nurture a child's whole understanding of music. I hope to work with your child soon!
