Homework

Move Like a Ninja, Jump Like Spiderman: A Parkour Freerunner Beginners Exercise and Street Gymnastics Class

This class is designed for individuals who want to learn the basics of parkour and street gymnastics, while learning to move like a ninja and jump like Spiderman. The course will cover a variety of topics such as how to use your body to move efficiently and creatively, how to jump, vault, climb and roll safely, how to use momentum and body control to overcome obstacles, and how to use parkour and gymnastics movements to mimic the movements of popular super heroes like Spiderman and ninjas. The class will be a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice that will provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to start practicing parkour and street gymnastics.

GOALS:
-Introduce students to the basics of parkour movement and techniques
-Help students develop strength, flexibility, and coordination
-Provide students with a safe environment to learn and practice
-Teach students how to move like a ninja and jump like Spiderman
-Develop sense of creativity and problem-solving skills

CLASS TOPICS:

Week 1 - Parkour: What is it?
● Foundation of our training as children.
● Where parkour came from.
● Why and where do we train?
● What do we wear?
● Core skills and health benefits.
● How to be a well-rounded athlete.
● DOs and DON’Ts.
● Warming up.
● Conditioning.
● Cooling down.

Week 2 - Jumping: Precision techniques. Rolling: Save your legs from impact.
Topics:
● Different types of jump - precision, running precision, plyo, stride.
● Combining the jumps.
● How to stick a jump.
● Safety roll. Why we do it.
● Combining a precision and safety roll.
● Hazards to look out for - e.g. ankle thing.

Week 3 - Vaults: A crash course.
● Most common vaults - speed step/vault, thief and lazy vault, dash, kong.
● Being ambidextrous (learning vaults on both sides).
● Explosive power.
● Hazards to look out for - e.g. wrist pain.

Week 4 - Flow: Combining everything you know.
● Combining precision with vaults - e.g. plyo to speed step.
● How to connect vaults in a line.
● The importance of steps.
● Creating a line.
● Speed and creativity.

Week 5 - Handstand techniques.
● Warming up the right parts of your body.
● Theory of balance.
● Against the wall.
● Tucked handstand.
● Straddle handstand.
● Full handstand demo.

Week 6 - Risk Assessment: Training in public.
● Why it can be dangerous to train in public.
● Private property and getting kicked off.
● Parkour parks.
● Indoor gyms.
● Checking your surfaces.
● Safety
● Training responsibly.

Note: This class requires students to wear comfortable and appropriate clothing for movement, and should be aware that this class may involve some risks inherent in physical activity and will take safety precautions accordingly.

This is the first and only Parkour / Freerunning class on Outschool. This class is only available on Outschool.

The flexible schedule (Flex Class) allows your learners to watch the pre-recorded videos and do them at a time that is FUN for them! You can also spend extra time on the topics your child is most interested in. Since this is a flex class with no live meetings, students can log in at a convenient time to complete the week's lesson. We will be going through each week as a group and I will post the lesson weekly (depending on which day you started).

Time-frame for the Week:
Saturday - Teacher will post the video for the week.
Sunday - The teacher can answer any questions from the students regarding the tricks in that week lesson.  The students will need to complete the homework and submit the video.
Wednesday - Students need to have all tasks completed and uploaded in the classroom.  
Thursday - I will provide feedback to the students about the homework. Students will also be able to take part in a student to student comments and review on the tricks they learn and video to be able to discuss how they best perform them with each other. 
Friday - I will be available for questions and feedback. 

No required experience or previous knowledge is needed by the learners.

Lesson 1:
The Parkour Foundation
 Learn the origins, essential skills, and health benefits of parkour, including warm-up and cool-down routines. 
Lesson 2:
Mastery of Jumping & Rolling
 Dive into various jumping techniques and the critical safety roll, understanding how to minimize impact and navigate hazards. 
Lesson 3:
Vaulting Techniques
 Explore common vaults and develop explosive power for overcoming obstacles with ease and safety. 
Lesson 4:
Flowing Like a Pro
 Combine jumps and vaults to create seamless parkour lines, focusing on creativity and efficiency. 

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This class is designed for beginners and will not include any potentially dangerous techniques or tricks. It is focused on teaching the core skills of parkour and movement in a safe and controlled environment. Before participating in the class, students will need to take certain precautions to ensure their safety, such as wearing trainers with a full rubber out-sole for maximum grip, choosing a training space that is free of trip hazards and sharp corners, and bringing a water bottle. The class will start with a full warm-up and stretch to prevent injuries, and it is strongly recommended that students be supervised by a parent or guardian. Potential injuries that may occur if proper supervision is not provided include ankle sprains, bruises, wrist sprains, and dehydration.
Supply List
This parkour class is designed for beginners and will only teach safe techniques and skills. Participants should take precautions to ensure their safety, such as wearing trainers with good grip and choosing a training space that is free of hazards. It is also important to bring a water bottle and to be properly warmed up and stretched before beginning the class. It is recommended that students be supervised by a parent or guardian to prevent injuries such as ankle sprains, bruises, wrist sprains, and dehydration. The class will focus on teaching the fundamentals of parkour and movement in a controlled and safe environment.

Alex is a highly experienced and skilled parkour and movement coach who has been actively involved in athletics and movement since a young age. He has been practicing parkour since the age of 17 and has been coaching for over 10 years, working with students ranging in age from 4 to 60 as part of The Urban Arts Academy in Brighton. In addition to his coaching experience, Alex has also performed parkour and stunts on television and at movie premieres, and has competed in speed, skill, and freestyle competitions around the world, including being a three-time World Chase Tag Champion with Team Marrero Gang. Alex has a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the field and is dedicated to helping his students develop their own skills and abilities in parkour and movement. Johnathan, who has also received parkour training from Alex, will also be teaching this class.
