Class Experience

During this course students will explore the historical and literary context behind The Red Badge of Courage. They will understand some literary devices and find them in the text, analyze text, synthesize ideas, complete active reading, develop supportive arguments, complete question/answer assignments, provide textual evidence to writing, and write a structured extended response.
I am a home educator with over 14 years of teaching experience with ages preschool to 12th grade. Specifically, I have taught multiple years of Middle School and High School English (including composition, literature, and grammar). Currently, I teach an intermediate and an advanced high school level composition/literature course at our area homeschool cooperative.

It is my belief that even the most reluctant writers can be unlocked with the right guidance and prompting. I have a college junior on the autism spectrum, a college freshman with ADHD, and a gifted 8th grader. Teaching them has provided me with the unique insight of how to teach children, at various levels, to express themselves.
Weekly reading and response writing will be required. The response writing is mostly in the form of question/answer or paragraph response. After completion of the novel, students will write a 5 Paragraph Essay. Response homework will be marked with full credit if thoughtful answers are provided. Paragraphs and the extended response will add grammar or content suggestions.
