Class Experience

Beginner Level
Let's draw dinosaurs together!
We'll practice some basic techniques for observing and drawing dinosaurs together. By learning to recognize the main shapes and features of some of our favorite dinosaurs, students will build their confidence and ability to recreate any dinosaur they find.

This is a beginning drawing class. I want to meet each student at their skill level. This class in intended to foster positive feelings about drawing and creating, while it draws on the natural curiosity and observational skills of each student. Although the drawings will be guided, students are encouraged to use their imaginations to add any "flare" they wish to their drawings.

At the end of each lesson, the learner will be encouraged (but never required) to show their progress by posting photos or videos in the classroom, where I can give them positive feedback or answer any of their questions about the drawing project or the featured creature. They are also encouraged to share their other creative projects and artworks that they’ve made outside of class.

This is an introductory course designed especially for early or mid-elementary learners. In addition to learning a bit about our weekly featured dinosaurs and drawing them together, your young learner will also practice sharing and presentation skills (if they choose to post in the classroom), following directions, learning to ask questions or ask for help, as well as practicing shape recognition and observation skills.

This is a wonderful companion class to my weekly "field guide" class: Dinosaur Collectors' Club, which goes into greater depth about each featured dinosaur, and includes weekly show-and-tell, games, discussion and more. To check it out, visit: http://tiny.cc/dinocollectorsclub

Each week will feature TWO dinosaur drawing lessons. For each lesson, there will be a reference page to print ( optional) and 1-2 video links. These links are private YouTube links, which will open safely within the Outschool platform and are only visible to your enrolled learner. At the end of each video lesson, students will be encouraged to share their finished work, ask for help and feedback, send photos and videos of their favorite dinosaur toys and books, and share other artworks that they have created on their own.
Learning Goals
Students will develop their ability to make scientific observations, to compare and contrast different species, and look for clues that can tell us more about how extinct animals lived long ago.
Students will learn to work from a reference. We will practice noticing basic shapes and use those to build the foundation of our drawing.
Learners will add important details that make each dinosaur unique. They will also be encouraged to use their own creativity to add their own details and storylines to their finished drawings.
Learners will practice presenting their artwork via photos, comments, and videos shared in the classroom.

I'm so excited to share my love of science, dinosaurs, and ART with you! I've been teaching STEAM and art through fun, engaging topics like these to Preschool through Middle School students for 8 years through an independent art institute and STEAM education company, and I'm really looking forward to connecting with new students here on Outschool. Not only will we geek out over art and drawing famous prehistoric creatures--but we'll sneak in some STEM/STEAM education, comparing and contrasting, observation, creativity, communication, shapes recognition, following directions, social skills, and more!
