Class Experience
In this class, your learner will be working through Medieval History-Based Writing Lessons from the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). This course takes the students through unit five of the program. Your learner will learn how to make an outline by determining key words and then move into paragraph writing by summarizing non-fiction texts, retelling short fictional stories, and writing from pictures. In the midst of all that writing, your child will learn how to spice up their pieces with sentence dress-ups and vary their sentence structure with different openers. Your child's grade will be based on a specific rubric that is provided in the Student Book from IEW. Your learner should already be able to construct simple sentences and have some basic knowledge of a paragraph. Because your child will be reading some short articles and stories, a good sense of comprehension of grade-level materials will be helpful. An instructional recording for each lesson will be sent out Monday mornings for 12 weeks. If you are unfamiliar with IEW, I highly recommend watching the video with your learner at a time that is convenient for you both and working through the assignments during the week together. I will be available through the private chat to answer any questions and provide detailed feedback on your learner's compositions. Feedback will be based on the checklist at the end of each lesson in the Student Book and will either be in written, audio, and/or video format. Topics will include: Unit 6: Summarizing Multiple References Week 1: Medieval Cathedrals Week 2: Knights, Part 1 Week 3: Knights, Part 2 Week 4: King Richard Unit 7: Inventive Writing Week 5: Favorite Amusements, Part 1 Week 6: Favorite Amusements, Part 2 Week 7: Chivalry, Part 1 Week 8: Chivalry, Part 2 Unit 8: Formal Essay Week 9: Knights, Part 3 Unit 9: Formal Critique Week 10: "Genghis Khan and His Hawk," Part 1 Week 11: "Genghis Khan and His Hawk," Part 2 Week 12 will be a project. Your learner will write a descriptive time travel diary using a Google Slide template designed like Instagram.
Learning Goals
Learners will be taught to organize thoughts and ideas by creating key word outlines from fiction and non-fiction texts, and writing paragraphs from them. They will dress up their writing by systematically using more detailed parts of speech such as adverbs, strong verbs, and adjectives. Students will also practice varied sentence structure by using different sentence openers.
