In this class, your learner will be working through Fables, Myths, and Fairy Tales from the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). This course will take the learners through units five and seven of the program. Your learner will use what he learned in Part 1 of this course to continue making outlines. Additionally, your learner will practice writing from pictures, summarizing multiple references (like a research report), and writing from a prompt. In the midst of all that writing, your...
Learners will improve their writing skills and learn how to organize their thoughts by creating outlines and compositions that follow the structure and style of IEW. They will dress up their writing by systematically adjusting parts of speech such as adverbs, strong verbs, and quality adjectives. Students will also practice varied sentence structure by using different sentence openers.
The learner should be prepared to spend 1-2 hours per week on homework outside of the recordings. This will include writing compositions, studying vocabulary, and participating in asynchronous learning opportunities. The adult at home should be prepared to help when needed. Google Docs is mandatory for grading purposes. In addition to writing assignments, your learner will be encouraged to send a video of their retellings each week to the rest of the class. After a few weeks of instruction, I will send grammar and vocabulary challenges once a week using either Google Slides or Nearpod. Using Google Slides asynchronously, the learners will apply strategies used in IEW's program to complete assignments, such as labelling parts of speech in a sentence or filling in a chart. Learners will be able to see what others share and leave comments as feedback. Nearpod activities will be used to review and master grammar concepts and parts of speech being studied. Vocabulary review and usage will also be included. These can be completed at your own pace.
Fables, Myths, and Fairy Tales Student Book (needs to be purchased from the IEW website) Binder Dividers Lined paper Pencils Pens Highlighters Printer Printer paper PC or laptop Reliable Internet connection I will supply a syllabus with links to required materials as well as optional and helpful resources.
The learner will be given detailed feedback weekly based on the rubric at the end of each lesson in the Student Book. Collection of feedback and grades will be done at the discretion of the adult at home. The learner will also receive feedback on retellings and grammar challenges.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
For grading purposes in Google Docs and for participation in the asynchronous Google Slides activities, each learner will need a GMail account (this can be your account or an account you set up separately for this class). External sources like Nearpod will also be used for asynchronous activities in this class. You do not need an account for this resource, but your learner will be prompted to type his/her name to participate. YouTube will be used for the recordings which will be shared in the Outschool classroom. Your learner will not be directed to the site. All activities are only available to the learners in this class.
