Description
Class Experience
This course is a beginning workshop in narrative film production. We will explore the fundamentals of production through lecture and active learning opportunities. Each week students will be asked to demonstrate the skills they learn through synchronous lectures, demonstrations, and readings. We will cover story structure, camera and lenses, composition, lighting, cinematography, sound recording, directing, and cinematic genre. Students will produce several films with an emphasis on visual...
By the end of the course, students will be able to: *Identify the important roles of filmmaking (e.g. Director, Cinematographer, Editor…) *Create short media production projects *Apply visualization and organizational skills in developing film projects. *Utilize cameras, lights, and recording equipment. *Critique peer work and offer constructive commentary when possible.
I hold an MFA in Cinema production and I teach production at a university. I have instructed undergraduate as well as graduate students in cinema production, foundations of cinema, editing, and film philosophy. I also own a small educational video production company.
Each week there will be a small production activity. These small activities will serve as a foundation for larger, more complex filmmaking as students move toward more advanced coursework.
Learners will need a digital camera capable of recording video as well as a video editing software or application. I also recommend each learner have some sort of storage device to hold their footage.
Each weekly assignment and submission will receive feedback.
No live meetings, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
