Your Incredible Human Body; Anatomy Lessons With Coordinating Craft Live Class
FLEX Explore with FractalMom--FLEX--Penguins, Whales, Vampire Squid & the Oceans
Class experience
***This is a FLEX schedule class. There are no scheduled Zoom meetings in this version of the class. Lessons are posted each week in the classroom and we will communicate in the Outschool Classroom and on FlipGrid. Learners are welcome to join the live version in Fall, Winter and Spring.*** Designed to encourage learners to explore their own world, outside and inside, this class combines real ocean observations, simple experiments, local nature observation, and an optional Citizen Science...
Students will learn to critically think about the world around them, and start to understand the scale of their surroundings in comparison to the scale of things much bigger and much smaller than themselves.
I am an Oceangrapher-Mom with a PhD who switched to soundscape ecology when my kids were young and we moved to Montréal. My kids and I started recording with a hydrophone in the lake and a recorder on a floating dock at the University of Montreal's Biological research station, and kept on listening in our backyard and the roof of their school. I have worked with marine biologists, fishermen, fisheries managers, ship captains, environmentalists, and all sorts of oceanographers (physical, chemical, biological, geological). As a team, we have looked at how plankton dynamics are affected by ocean currents, how fisheries respond to climactic changes in circulation, and how whales and dolphins respond to our research efforts in their homes. I am teaching these classes because the world needs citizen scientists who can think critically about how our world is changing, and find new ways to communicate, innovate, and compensate. I am so lucky to have found Outschool-- I have learned so much from exploring with students from all over the world during the past year.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
We will refer to websites at NASA (satellite observations), UCSD (whales and dolphin songs), and the Discovery of Sound in the Sea (dosits.org). Students will also have access to the Google Classroom for this course, which will include links to all the materials that some learners may find easier to navigate.
My goal is to bring as many new observers into the growing global network of Citizen Scientists as possible! I have a PhD from Cornell, am a visiting scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), have done forensics on hostage videos...
