(FLEX) ELA Writing Middle School Semester Class: Writing the Personal Narrative
Class experience
US Grade 6 - 8
THERE ARE NO LIVE MEETINGS FOR THIS CLASS. In this eight week FLEX class, you will learn what a personal narrative is and how to write one, using the writing process from planning to final draft. You will also be able to share your draft with others in class to get peer feedback as well as my feedback, which I give weekly. This is not a LIVE class. WHY IS PERSONAL NARRATIVE IMPORTANT TO LEARN? Learning to write a personal narrative is important for scholarships, college and trade school...
Your student will learn how to analyze a personal narrative, plan, draft, revise, edit and publish their own personal narrative and share in discussions with other FLEX classmates in the Outschool classroom. THERE ARE NO LIVE MEETINGS FOR THIS COURSE.
MY EXPERTISE: My name is Kathie Harsch, and I am an Outschool Creative Writing teacher. I teach the writing strategies and techniques that help middle school writers to take their writing skills from general to organized and detailed. I’m also a published author of 4 books and a blogger. I have over 26 years of classroom experience teaching English Language Arts and Creative Writing for middle school students. After graduating from University of South Florida in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing, I worked for USF for several years and decided to become a Language Arts teacher. In 1996, I became an English Language Arts teacher for middle school students grades 6-8. I took post graduate credits for my education certification from USF. Teaching Certifications from the state of Florida include: English Middle Grades 5-9 English 6-12 ESL ESE Business Media Specialist Teaching Experience: (26 years) 1996-2018 English Language Arts teacher Middle School grades 6-8 2004 Fellowship with Tampa Bay Area Writing Project, part of the National Writing Project 2005 I.C.E. Homework Offered
All work is independent, so learners need to pace themselves and remain on a weekly schedule in order to accomplish this course in eight weeks. Each Monday at 12:00AM Eastern Standard Time, I will be posting the week's agenda with links to lessons and assignments. Each Wednesday, I will be post the Share Discussion for the week that students will comment on and share their ideas. Assignments are due on Friday, so I can give feedback over the weekend for the upcoming week.2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
I will give feedback reports to students. If a letter grade is needed, we can use the rubric to assign that, which parents will also see.Grades Offered
Students will need a notebook to take notes and write inside for some lesson activities. They can also draft their personal narratives in this before typing (some students prefer that). Students will also need a personal Google account that you oversee as their parent/guardian. It cannot be a brick and mortar school account, since these often will not allow students to access any Google files outside of their school for safety reasons. All materials are delivered through my Google Drive file that I share each week with students.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Your learner will need access to: Pear Deck (they will get a link for this inside the classroom that makes Google Slides Interactive with questions and responses students type in as they go through the lesson) Canva (free digital design app they can use for Week 8) NearPod (Interactive learning app) Google Drive (all lesson files, videos, assignments, and other handouts will be linked to this) Google Docs Google Forms Google Slides Google Links Learners will be asked to make copies of Google Digital worksheets (from Google Slides and Google Docs) so they can type inside of them. There are also PDF versions available for every worksheet, but these would need to be printed, hand-written, a photo taken of the completed worksheet and those images uploaded to the Teacher tab inside the Outschool Classroom every Friday.
Common Lit.com for personal narrative examples; all other resources are made by me.
