Class Experience
Students come to my other classes wanting to know how to get more views and subscribers. The answer is by creating quality content and looking professional. This course will focus on improving channel branding and the experience created for viewers. It is best for students who are already producing videos and are ready to make their channel look professional. It is for serious YouTubers. Because this is a flex class each day will involve: watching video(s), completing worksheet(s), and posting information for peer review either in the classroom or on a third party website. Each morning, I will direct students to a link containing interactive videos and activities for them to engage in. These activities will vary depending on the topic. They may include watching YouTube videos, answering questions in the Outschool classroom, taking quizzes, responding to a Padlet (in larger groups), or working through an interactive slide deck. Student work will be completed either in Google Documents or on their YouTube channel. Interaction with other learners in the class is highly recommended. Interaction between learners is encouraged on the Outschool discussion board. Some learners prefer to interact with me through private messaging. I cannot force students to interact with each other. I will collect ongoing feedback using Google documents and forms to progress through the content at a pace appropriate for the group. Students must have a YouTube channel and photo editing software of their choice. Video editing software is recommended but not required. Students must have parental permission to have a YouTube channel, upload videos, and share their channel name and link with the class. I will ask students to post their work for peer and instructor feedback. I will ask permission to provide them with public constructive feedback about their work to post for the class. My feedback will tell them what they are doing well as well as what they can improve. My feedback may be in written or video form depending on the topic. I will encourage the class to also be kind in their comments but there is a chance that sensitive children may not like what other students say. If students do not want their work shared publically, I will review it privately and provide general comments about areas for improvement to the large group. However, students will get more out of the class if they are open to feedback from peers. The plan below is preliminary and will be adjusted based on how students are progressing through the course. I will talk about all the content listed below but students may not be able to apply it all in the four week period. In particular, creating a good channel trailer and branded intro for videos is time-consuming. ***This class has the same content as my in-person camp: "10 Steps to an Awesome and Subscribable YouTube Channel: Summer Camp (Age 10-15). I have added extra content to the flex version of the class that is not always covered in the live version."*** Week 1: Channel Branding ~ Monday (Step 1) Target Audience and Value Proposition ~ Tuesday (Step 2) Copyright Basics, SMART Goal setting, and How to Give Constructive Feedback (not part of the in-person summer camp but talked about on Application days) ~ Wednesday (Step 3) Channel Title and Icon ~ Thursday (Step 4) Channel Header Image ~ Friday Student Lead Q and A Week 2: Channel Branding ~ Monday (Step 5) Channel Trailer and Sections ~ Tuesday (Step 6) Thumbnails ~ Wednesday (Step 7) Branding Consistency and Mobile Considerations ~ Thursday (Step 8) Updating the About Page ~ Friday Student Lead Q and A Week 3: Channel Branding and Experience ~ Monday (Step 9) Improving Video Titles and Descriptions (not part of the in-person summer camp) ~ Tuesday (Step 10) Metadata (not part of the in-person summer camp) ~ Wednesday (Step 11) Balancing publishing consistency and frequency with content quality ~ Thursday (Step 12) Hooking the viewer ~ Friday Student Lead Q and A Week 4: Channel Branding and Experience ~ Monday (Step 12) End cards (+ what to do instead if your content is made for kids) ~ Tuesday (Step 14) Branded Video Intros ~ Wednesday (Step 15) Channel Review and Healthy ways to promote your channel (not part of the in-person summer camp) ~ Thursday and Friday Student Lead Q and A + Course Celebration (and Qualifying for the hall of fame)
Learning Goals
The focus will be placed on creating a highly subscribable channel throughout this course.

Parental Guidance
**This class focuses on what to do, not how to do it. I offer suggestions for programs but do not teach students how to use them. There are just too many possibilities. Some steps cannot be completed from a mobile device due to YouTube's restrictions.**
1) Creating a YouTube following takes a lot of time and effort. This course will help students get their channel ready for attracting subscribers, but producing consistent quality content is needed to attract and keep subscribers. Students should not expect that they will get a lot of subscribers immediately.
2) I will ask students to watch video clips from YouTube (both popular videos and student videos). I will screen them before class to make sure they do not contain swears, are not explicit, and are culturally sensitive.
3) Students will be asked to share their YouTube channel information with each other. Sometimes students try to get people to subscribe to their channels in sessions about YouTube. Students are not allowed to self-promote their channels. If they continue to attempt to self-promote I may need to remove them from the class. They are encouraged to talk about the kinds of videos they make where it is relevant. If other students are interested in subscribing that may happen naturally. However, students must not ask their peers to sub for sub.
4) If your child is under 13 they will need your support and guidance when creating and uploading videos. YouTube requires creators to be age 13 or older to have an account. Many younger children have an account, but it is important that their parents are involved in keeping them safe online. For more about supporting a child with a YouTube account please see: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/learning-with-technology/is-it-ok-for-my-kid-to-start-her-own-youtube-channel
Supply List
Google documents and forms will be used for class activities and to collect feedback from students. Students must have a YouTube channel and photo editing software of their choice. I will ask them what they are using. Two suggestions will be provided if they do not have one they like. Video editing software is recommended but not required. Students must have parental permission to have a YouTube channel, upload videos, and share their channel name and link with the class. I may also request that students visit websites. I have found that Padlet is best for larger groups. Depending on the number of students I may use the Outschool discussion board instead of Padlet.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have studied and applied these course topics to my NurseKillam YouTube channel with over 28.5k subscribers. https://www.youtube.com/user/NurseKillam
Before my children lost interest I also helped them make some videos two years ago. My 6-year-old is regaining interest and will be starting his channel back up again once he learns how to do all the work on his own (I am teaching him to record and edit). As a parent I want him to learn to run it on his own so it becomes his creative passion project.

Here on Outschool, I have helped many children develop professional looking channels. Parents of some of these children have given permission for me to feature their child’s work to help other children become YouTubers.
