Class Experience
US Grade 6 - 9
A large vocabulary is critical to future success on standardized tests, in college, and in the workplace. So why not start building a better vocabulary right now? In this four-week FLEX class, students will learn 10 vocabulary words during each weekly session. In the video, the instructor will present the word's part of speech, definition, etymology, synonyms, antonyms, and use in language. This class uses the same class format as the popular ongoing class, Vocabulary Workshop. If your student has taken the live class before, please check the word list below to ensure that you are not repeating words. Each week, students will receive a worksheet to use while watching the video to write down definitions, synonyms, and antonyms. Students will also be given access to a Quizlet (online flashcards and games) and a Nearpod activity to practice the words throughout the week. The word lists are as follows: WEEK 1: trivialize, inordinate, gauge, impunity, amorphous, eclectic, provincial, tyro, adroit, pinpoint WEEK 2: maladroit, glut, inopportune, precipice, vanquish, gouge, mantra, bona fide, trammel, maniacal WEEK 3: ocher, fathom, cavity, bereft, respite, rapacious, burnish, jocular, conciliatory, surmise WEEK 4: croon, unscrupulous, dwindle, palatial, stint, didactic, amiss, commensurate, malaise, attribute

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
My passion -- as well as my professional background -- is writing. Professionally, I hold a B.A. in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and I've been published in numerous newspapers and magazines. I've also taught writing and literature classes to students of all ages and abilities. For this class in particular, I bring my innate love of vocabulary and big, beautiful words!
On a personal note, I have homeschooled all five of my children and taught them all to read and write... and with each it has been a different experience! What's easy for one child is not easy for another. When I teach online, I always remember that it's important to keep learning fun and to incorporate different methods of teaching to reach all my students.
